Paul Sewald News
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) will throw his second bullpen session of his recovery process on Tuesday. In his first bullpen session on Saturday, Sewald threw 18 pitches after initially landing on the injured list with a Grade 2 left-oblique strain. The 33-year-old could be getting close to going on a minor-league rehab assignment, but oblique injuries for pitchers can be hard to predict. Until Sewald is able to return to Arizona's bullpen, he should remain stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues. Kevin Ginkel has served as the Snakes' fill-in closer since Sewald landed on the IL, with Ryan Thompson and Kyle Nelson setting him up in the late innings. Sewald had a career-high 34 combined saves in 2023 with the D-backs and the Seattle Mariners.
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. This will be Sewald's first bullpen session since he suffered his Grade 2 oblique strain. It may still be some time before Sewald is able to come off the injured list, but being able to progress to a bullpen session is a good sign for the 33-year-old. Fantasy managers should continue to keep an eye on the closer's progress and keep him stashed on their rosters until he is able to be activated. In the meantime, expect Kevin Ginkel to continue to get save opportunities for Arizona until Sewald is back.
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) threw up to 60 feet on Tuesday and was asymptomatic, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The skipper called the session a good sign in Sewald's progression as he tries to recover from a Grade 2 oblique strain that he suffered late in spring training. The injury landed the 33-year-old on the injured list to begin the 2024 season. He must still progress to throwing long toss before he can resume throwing bullpen sessions and facing live hitters. It all means that fantasy managers should not expect Sewald to come off the injured list when he's eligible on April 9, but he should remain stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues. The D-backs haven't had a save situation arise yet early on, but if one does pop up, Kevin Ginkel is expected to be first in line for save chances in the desert with Sewald on the shelf.

Despite his numbers regressing following the trade to Arizona, Paul Sewald remained a fantasy asset. Over the entire season, in 65 appearances (60.2 IP) Sewald had a 3-2 W-L record, 3.12 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 80 Ks and 34 saves. After putting up a 2.93 ERA with the Mariners (43.0 IP), Sewald had a 3.57 ERA with the Diamondbacks (17.2 IP). The concern is the 4.92 xFIP and 4.34 SIERA in Arizona after having a 3.29 xFIP and 2.76 SIERA in Seattle. It's only a small sample and across the entire year, Sewald had a 3.76 xFIP and 3.23 SIERA which is much more in line with his season ERA. Sewald had a 50.0% FB% (according to Fangraphs) which was tenth highest among the 162 qualified relievers. Chase Field has been more pitcher-friendly than T-Mobile Park when it comes to home runs. His increase in home runs allowed following the trade again looks like a case of small sample luck. Sewald appears locked in as Arizona's closer and if you miss out on one of the top-tier options, he makes a great option to build your bullpen around.
