Michael Lorenzen News
Philadelphia Phillies right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen has made the NLDS roster. Lorenzen, who was a key trade-deadline acquisition for the Phillies, was surprisingly left off the roster for the Wild Card round. The 31-year-old put up a shaky 5.51 ERA (5.81 FIP) with just 28 strikeouts to 20 walks over 47 1/3 innings (11 games, seven starts) with the Phillies but did throw a no-hitter in his second start with the team. He'll likely be used in middle relief during the Divisional Series against the Atlanta Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies left All-Star right-hander Michael Lorenzen off the roster for the wild-card series against the Miami Marlins this week but included rookie reliever Orion Kerkering and rookie corner outfielder/infielder Weston Wilson. Kerkering, the team's No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline, struck out six in three scoreless innings of relief after being called up in late September. He gives the Phils yet another high-leverage strikeout arm for the back end of the bullpen after starting the 2023 season with Single-A Clearwater. Lorenzen made the All-Star team this year and threw a no-hitter on Aug. 9 for the Phillies, but he had a rough 8.01 ERA in his last 30 1/3 innings and had been moved to the bullpen to close out the regular season. Wilson had a career year in the minors and will give Philadelphia an extra right-handed bench bat.
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Michael Lorenzen recorded his first save in 2023 as he closed out the Mets on Sunday. He needed just 13 pitches to shut down Mets batters in the ninth. Lorenzen has worked out of the bullpen before, as he's collected 15 saves in his major league career. His last save was in the 2021 season. The 31-year-old has posted a 4-2 record with a 5.89 ERA in 44/1 innings since joining the Phillies.
