Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Angel Zerpa was handed the ball with a one-run lead against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Zerpa picked up his first career save on Monday and was asked to do it again a few days later. The southpaw gave up a leadoff single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to begin the final frame. The Milwaukee Brewers acquired left-hander Angel Zerpa from the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in exchange for outfielder Isaac Collins and right-handed reliever Nick Mears. Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said that the team is open to looking at Zerpa as a starter. "He's somebody we've been trying to access for a long time," Arnold said. The 26-year-old Venezuelan southpaw was a starter in the minors, but he was a reliever in KC the last two years, posting a 4.03 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 107 strikeouts and 41 walks in 118 1/3 innings over his 129 outings (two starts). At best, Zerpa is just a name to file away and watch during spring training if Milwaukee indeed stretches him out as a starter. If Zerpa is a full-time starter in 2026 with the Brewers, he'll most likely be on an innings cap after spending the last two years as a full-time reliever.

The Kansas City Royals announced that right-hander Michael Lorenzen (illness) will not make his scheduled start against the New York Mets on Saturday because of an illness. Left-handed reliever Angel Zerpa will take his place. Lorenzen posted arguably his best start of the season in his previous outing last Sunday. He fired a seven-inning, two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Overall, Lorenzen has gone 5-8 with an unspectacular 4.61 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 85:29 K:BB in 99 2/3 innings. Zerpa hasn't recorded more than nine outs in any of his 40 appearances this year, meaning he won't be in for long on Saturday. The 25-year-old has a 3.89 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB across 39 1/3 frames.

Zerpa had a solid 2.91 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, nine walks and 22 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings over six rehab starts with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha, and he'll continue to work in Omaha's starting rotation now that he's fully healthy. The 23-year-old southpaw made his big-league debut back in 2021 with one start. In four appearances (three starts) for the Royals in 2021 and 2022, Zerpa went 2-2 with a strong 1.13 ERA (4.63 FIP), 1.00 WHIP, four walks and seven strikeouts in 16 innings.
