Joey Ortiz News
Milwaukee Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz has been informed that he's made the team's Opening Day roster out of spring training. It's the first time that Ortiz has made an Opening Day roster in the big leagues. The 25-year-old will most likely operate as a utility infielder for the Brew Crew early on, with most of his playing time coming at third and second base. The former fourth-round selection by the Baltimore Orioles in 2019 out of New Mexico State made his big-league debut in 2023 and played in only 15 games, going 7-for-33 (.212) with no home runs and four RBI. Ortiz's glove is more impressive than his bat, but he will have more opportunities for plate appearances in Milwaukee's infield than he did in Baltimore.
Milwaukee Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz, who was acquired in the deal that sent right-hander Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles, is No. 58 on The Athletic's Keith Law's prospects list and could be part of Milwaukee's third base mix in 2024. He could also slide over to shortstop if the Brewers trade Willy Adames. Andruw Monasterio, who had a .330 on-base percentage but only a .348 slugging % in 2023, Owen Miller and Tyler Black are other options for the hot corner for the Brew Crew. Black can swing it, but there are questions about his defense. Brock WIlken, the 18th overall pick out of Wake Forest last year, is also an option in the pipeline for down the road. The 25-year-old Ortiz could end up being Milwaukee's Opening Day starter at third if he impresses in spring training.
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired left-hander DL Hall, shortstop Joey Ortiz and the 34th overall pick in this year's MLB draft from the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday in a blockbuster trade that sent right-hander Corbin Burnes to the O's, according to a source. Hall, 25, was once a top pitching prospect for Baltimore, but he's made 29 appearances and one start in the big leagues and was used as a reliever in 2023 due to an injury. Hall ended up with a 3.26 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 19 1/3 innings last season. With a change of scenery, Hall should have a better shot at cracking Milwaukee's Opening Day rotation, especially with Burnes now gone. Ortiz is in a similar situation after being blocked at the big-league level for a middle-infield spot in Baltimore. The 25-year-old will have more opportunity with the Brew Crew after hitting .321 (112-for-349) with nine home runs, 58 RBI and 11 steals in 88 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2023.
