Joey Ortiz News
Baltimore Orioles infield prospect Joey Ortiz went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. His strong performance raised his batting average to an impressive .348 to go along with seven home runs, 34 RBI and nine stolen bases. The 25-year-old doesn't have much left to prove on the farm, but the Orioles also don't have a clear opening for him at the big-league level. Ortiz has gotten a few cups of coffee this season for the Orioles and has gone 7-for-33 with four RBI. It's likely that he will get another call at some point this summer, but without everyday at-bats, Ortiz is best suited as a watch list option in redraft formats with more appealing value in dynasty platforms.
The Baltimore Orioles recalled infield prospect Joey Ortiz from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday and optioned catcher Mark Kolozsvary to Norfolk after Tuesday's game in a corresponding move. Ortiz, the team's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was recently sent to the minors on May 26 after going 7-for-27 (.259) with a double, four RBI and four runs scored in his first 11 big-league contests. He's been mashing at Norfolk with a .328/.373/.570 slash line with 10 doubles, three triples, five homers and 20 RBI in 32 games, so the O's will give him another shot in the majors for the time being. The 24-year-old middle infielder will likely serve as depth for now and is more polished defensively, making him unattractive in mixed fantasy leagues for now.
Baltimore Orioles infield prospect Joey Ortiz has been promoted to the MLB roster ahead of their series against the Detroit Tigers. MLB Pipeline's No. 91 overall prospect, Ortiz slashed .359/.389/.500 over 16 games with Triple-A Norfolk, including seven extra-base hits. His promotion may be short-lived, instead providing immediate right-handed hitting relief with Austin Hays and Jorge Mateo banged up. Nonetheless, Ortiz carries excellent contact metrics and may have an opportunity to stick around for good if his first taste of the big leagues is a success. Fantasy managers should consider adding Ortiz now, especially in dynasty and keeper leagues, as he figures to be a mainstay on the MLB roster at some point.
