White Sox Claim Peyton Burdick Off Waivers From Orioles

The Chicago White Sox claimed outfielder Peyton Burdick off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday and placed right-hander Matt Foster (elbow) on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The White Sox will be Burdick's third team of the offseason, and he'll have his best shot at making the Opening Day roster with the rebuilding club. The 26-year-old will be no more than outfield depth, though. The former third-round pick of the Miami Marlins in 2019 out of Wright State has appeared in 46 games the last two seasons with the Fish, hitting .200/.281/.368 with only five home runs, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and 12 runs scored in 139 plate appearances.

Peyton Burdick Traded To Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Peyton Burdick from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for Burdick on the 40-man roster, Baltimore shifted right-handed reliever F lix Bautista (elbow) to the 60-day injured list. Burdick had been designated for assignment by the Marlins last week, and the Orioles represent just his second organization since being drafted in 2019. The 26-year-old has struggled at all levels of pro ball, posting high strikeout rates, low OPS totals, and poor defensive metrics. Even if he manages to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Burdick isn't expected to make an impact at the big-league level anytime soon.

Marlins Acquire Darren McCaughan, Designate Peyton Burdick

The Miami Marlins have acquired right-handed pitcher Darren McCaughan from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for McCaughan on the 40-man roster, Miami designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment. McCaughan, who will be 28 years old when the 2024 regular season begins, showed promise through limited major league action last year. Over the course of five innings, he struck out 10 batters while posting a 2.71 xFIP and 64.3 GB%. Although this was a small sample size, McCaughan has shown that he can be a contributor out of the bullpen. On the other hand, Burdick, who was designated for assignment, has struggled at all levels of pro ball, posting high strikeout rates, low OPS totals, and poor defensive metrics. He isn't expected to make an impact at the big-league level anytime soon, regardless of whether he remains with the Marlins or joins another organization.

Peyton Burdick Called Up, Garrett Cooper Goes On Injured List

The Miami Marlins recalled outfield prospect Peyton Burdick from Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday and placed first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper (ear) on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move with an inner-ear infection. The Marlins also selected left-hander Devin Smeltzer's contract from Triple-A and designated right-hander Johan Quezada for assignment. Burdick hit just .207 with four home runs and 11 RBI in his first 32 big-league games in 2022, but he was hitting .293 (29-for-99) with four doubles, 10 home runs, 24 RBI and five steals in 25 games at Triple-A before his call-up. The 26-year-old is worth a pickup in deep-mixed and NL-only leagues. Cooper should be back when he's eligible to return, and Yuli Gurriel will hold down the fort at first base in the meantime.

Peyton Burdick Making MLB Debut Friday

Miami Marlins outfield prospect Peyton Burdick was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday and will make his major league debut against Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele, as he's starting in left field and hitting seventh in the batting order. The club's No. 10 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, could see regular playing time in Miami's outfielder after Jesus Sanchez was sent down on Thursday. In 88 games for Jacksonville before his call-up, Burdick was hitting .229/.344/.430 with 14 home runs, 51 RBI, 70 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 385 plate appearances. The 25-year-old right-handed hitter has plus power to all fields, but his aggressive approach at the plate leads to a lot of swing and miss. Those in need of power down the stretch in deeper leagues should give Burdick a look.

Peyton Burdick Doing Well In Triple-A

Miami Marlins outfield prospect Peyton Burdick went 2-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts for Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday. The 25-year-old is now hitting .234 with seven home runs, 20 RBI and six stolen bases. Burdick has a knack for hitting the ball hard and also isn't shy about trying to swipe a bag. With the Marlins offense struggling, there is a chance that Burdick could see time in the big leagues during the 2022 campaign. If he were to get a promotion, he would make for an intriguing waiver-wire pickup in redraft leagues. Now is the time for dynasty managers to start monitoring his progress before it's too late.
