Rhys Hoskins Off To Ice Cold Start In 2020

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins has gotten off to an underwhelming start during the shortened 2020 campaign. While his walk rate remains terrific (29%), Hoskins amassed just one extra-base hit in his first seven games, still searching for his first home run. The .167 xBA is a concern, as is the 68 OPS+. His gig as Philadelphias full-time first baseman seems fairly air tight, but prospect Alec Bohm may eventually become an intriguing backup plan if the slugging Hoskins can not find his form. Facing left-handed pitching may ignite Hoskins bat, as he mashed southpaws to the tune of a .980 OPS last season. He will face Atlantas Max Fried on Sunday and Sean Newcomb on Monday, giving him two prime opportunities to begin finding his groove.

Rhys Hoskins Off To Slow Start This Spring

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is 7-for-27 so far this spring with 12 strikeouts in 11 games. Given that it's Spring Training, there's not too much to worry about with Hoskins, but he is coming off a down season where he hit just .226 with an expected batting average of .221. Despite the bad batting average, Hoskins should provide big power thanks to a career fly ball rate over 50 percent that boosts his power totals playing in hitter-friendly Philadelphia. Hoskins should provide plenty of homers and RBI, but unless his batting average bounces back, he won't return value on his average draft position of 105th overall.

Rhys Hoskins Will Sit Out on Tuesday

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. Hoskins will sit out the second game of the doubleheader to rest. The Phillies don't have much reason to win after being eliminated from playoff contention earlier on Tuesday. Logan Morrison will bat second and play first base versus righty Max Scherzer. Morrison is in a favorable part of the order, but isn't worth a look in this game.
