Rhys Hoskins News
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) will undergo left ACL reconstruction surgery on Thursday in Texas, and the procedure will be performed by Dr. Steve Singleton. Hoskins tore his left ACL in a Grapefruit League game last week and will miss the entire 2023 season. It's a tough blow for anyone that already drafted the 30-year-old slugger. He's set to become a free agent this winter. If you have a draft before Opening Day on Thursday, you'll obviously want to avoid him. With Hoskins done, Darick Hall is expected to see most of the playing time at the hot corner for the Phillies in 2023. Hall hits left-handed and could sit against lefty pitchers, with Alec Bohm sliding over to first and either Edmundo Sosa or Josh Harrison playing third those days.
Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that first baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) will get a second opinion on his injured left knee, but it's clear there's a tear in his ACL. The Phillies still expect him to miss the entire 2023 season after his knee gave out on him in a Grapefruit League game on Thursday. It's terrible news for fantasy managers that already drafted Hoskins in 2023. If you have yet to draft, you'll obviously want to avoid the 30-year-old slugger this year. With Hoskins done, Darick Hall is expected to get the majority of playing time at first base for the Phillies, with Jake Cave another potential option at the cold corner for the Phillies.
After a scary non-contact injury while fielding a routine ground ball during Thursday's action, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that first-baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) tore his ACL. A subsequent MRI revealed that he had a left knee anterior cruciate ligament tear, which would require an ACL reconstruction. The timetable is unknown as of now, but Hoskins is doubtful to play in 2023. The 30-year-old was having quite a productive spring as displayed by his .355/.474/.806 slash line with four home runs. Hoskins is a premier first baseman in the game and such a devastating injury makes an impact on the entire league. As a replacement, Darick Hall is likely to fill the void at first base for the upcoming season.

Rhys Hoskins is perennially a strong value pick, delivering 30 homers with a .246/.332/.462 line last season. Yet both Phillies fans and the fantasy community are down on him. His 10.7 BB% and 25.1 K% were both worse than his career averages of 13.5% and 23.9%, but he still draws a ton of walks and the strikeouts aren't excessive for a slugger of his caliber. His 25.8% chase rate and 9.9 SwStr% also suggest that Hoskins is better than his surface plate discipline stats. Nobody does a better job elevating the ball than Hoskins, and last year's 41.7 FB% was a career low. He still cracked 30 bombs and took advantage of the lower FB% to post a career-best .292 BABIP. Hoskins offers solid contact quality with a 94.2 mph average airborne exit velocity and 11.1% rate of Brls/BBE, and the ball flies out of his home ballpark. Hoskins is even projected as Philadelphia's second hitter, providing plenty of counting stats to go with his homers. Hoskins should easily be a top-100 fantasy player, making his ADP of 114.39 a tremendous value.
