Robinson Cano Playing In World Baseball Classic

Free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano is on Team Dominican Republic's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. The 41-year-old played in only 33 major-league games for the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves in 2022, but he could serve as a capable bat off the bench against right-handed pitchers in the tournament. In his 104 plate appearances last year, he hit just .150 with a home run, four RBI and five runs scored. The eight-time All-Star has yet to officially retire, but he remains a free agent with spring training starting for pitchers and catchers next week.

Braves Plan To Activate Robinson Cano On Monday

The Atlanta Braves are expected to activate their newest acquisition, second baseman Robinson Cano, prior to Monday's game against his former team, the New York Mets. The Braves acquired Cano from the San Diego Padres in exchange for cash considerations on Sunday. The Braves are Cano's third team this season. He played in exactly 12 games for both the Mets and the Padres. The 39-year-old veteran hasn't been able to settle in at the plate yet this year, slashing just .149/.182/.189.

Braves Acquire Robinson Cano

The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a deal to acquire second baseman Robinson Cano from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations. They will receive the 39-year-old slugger on a veteran minimum deal. The New York Mets are on the hook for $24 million after releasing Cano earlier in the season. Cano has struggled with the bat this season and isn't worth a look in fantasy leagues. He'll likely get a decent amount of playing time in Atlanta, but it's unlikely he has much to offer at this point in his career.

Robinson Cano Signs Minor League Deal With Padres

The San Diego Padres and infielder Robinson Cano agreed upon a minor league deal on Friday. Cano will report to Triple-A El Paso after declining to report to El Paso last week. He then briefly became a free-agent but Cano must have found that the market for his services was quiet, so he rejoined the San Diego organization on Friday. Cano has hit .149 with one homer, four runs, and four RBI across 24 games in 2022, split between the Padres and the New York Mets.

Robinson Cano Optioned, Elects Free Agency

The San Diego Padres optioned infielder Robinson Cano to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, but he has elected free agency. In a corresponding move, the team selected the contract of outfielder Nomar Mazara from the minors. After getting cut by the New York Mets earlier this year, Cano went just 3-for-33 with one RBI and 10 strikeouts in 12 games for the Friars after he hit .195/.233/.268 with a homer and three RBI in 12 games for the Mets. The 39-year-old finished his short stay in San Diego by going hitless in his final 20 at-bats. Cano has struck out 27.3% of the time this year, and it remains to be seen if he'll get another shot in the big leagues in 2022 and beyond.

Padres Expected To Option Robinson Cano

The San Diego Padres are expected to request that second baseman Robinson Cano be optioned to the minors on Thursday, whereupon Cano would likely decline, making him a free agent again. The 39-year-old veteran was cut by the New York Mets after he hit just .195/.233/.268 with a homer and three RBI in 12 games. The Padres took a flier on him, but he's been worse in 11 games with the Friars, going 3-for-32 (.094) with no homers, one RBI, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Cano hit well this spring after missing all of the 2021 season due to a performance-enhancing drug suspension, but it looks like he's run out of gas so far in 2022.

Robinson Cano Officially Joins Padres

The San Diego Padres have officially agreed to a contract with infielder Robinson Cano. The 39-year-old will get a major league contract after being released by the Mets on May 8. Cano will be a solid left-handed option off the bench and a possible option at designated hitter. This season, Cano is hitting .195/.233/.268, but everyone knows what he is capable of doing with the bat. However, his best days with the bat are behind him, so Cano is only worth a look in deep leagues.

Robinson Cano To Sign With The Padres On Friday

The San Diego Padres are expected to sign veteran second baseman Robinson Cano on Friday, according to Jon Heyman. The 39-year-old will be activated prior to Friday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. Heyman notes that Cano will give the Padres a left-handed bat off the bench and that he could be utilized in the designated hitter spot as well. Of course, that all depends on Cano finding his groove at the plate. The longtime Yankee appeared in 12 games with the New York Mets this year before he was DFA'd and he slashed just .195/.233/.268 over that 12-game stint.

Padres Close To Signing Robinson Cano

The San Diego Padres are close to signing free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano, according to sources. The New York Mets released Cano on Sunday after he hit only .195 with one home run, three RBI and three runs scored in his first 12 games of the season. However, the 39-year-old had an .896 OPS in 2020 before he was suspended for all of the 2021 season, and the left-handed-hitting veteran also swung a hot bat this spring training. Cano is clearly past his prime, but the Padres haven't gotten much production out of their designated hitter spot in the early going, and he could also provide depth at the keystone behind the struggling Jake Cronenworth. It's still unlikely that Cano would provide consistent fantasy stat lines in a part-time role in San Diego.

Robinson Cano Designated For Assignment

The New York Mets designated second baseman Robinson Cano for assignment on Monday. The Mets still owe Cano close to $39 million. The Mets had to cut their roster down from 28 players to 26 on Monday, and the 39-year-old is the odd man out. Cano missed all of last season while being suspended for performance-enhancing drugs, and he had gone just 8-for-41 with one home run, three RBI and 11 strikeouts in 12 games for the Mets before getting cut on Monday. Cano could latch on with another organization if he's granted his outright release, but the veteran second baseman probably won't be much more than second base depth with a new team.
