The Cleveland Indians released catcher Ryan Hanigan on Monday. Hanigan was a non-roster invitee in Cleveland's camp, and hit just .154 in Cactus League play. He's a veteran with experience and will try to latch on with a new team before Opening Day, although he's unlikely to crack a big league roster to start the season.
Free-agent catcher Ryan Hanigan signed with the Cleveland Indians, according to Bob Nightengale on Twitter. Nightengale says that this is a minor league deal with a spring training invite and that Hanigan will earn $1.25 million if he makes the big league roster. Hanigan would be a backup to Roberto Perez and Yan Gomes in Cleveland and has a .624 OPS over the last four seasons.
Colorado Rockies backup catcher Ryan Hanigan is off to the disabled list with a strained groin. Hanigan was seen limping during Sunday's game, and the team decided it was best to give him the time to recover before the stretch run. With newly acquired Jonathan Lucroy handling the majority of the catching duties, Colorado brought up former starter Tony Wolters to work off the bench. This shouldn't impact Lucroy's playing time much as Hanigan and Wolters are basically interchangeable anyway.
