Sam Coonrod and Freddy Galvis Set For Rehab Assignments
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Sam Coonrod (elbow) and second baseman Freddy Galvis (quad) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. Coonrod has been sidelined since June 25 with right forearm tendinitis. He was cleared to resume throwing and, barring a setback, could be activated next week. The 28-year-old owns a 4.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts over 27 appearances before being placed on the IL. As for Galvis, he was acquired in a trade with the Orioles and has been sidelined since late June with a strained right quad. The 31-year-old slashed .249/.306/.414 with nine home runs, 26 RBI, 36 runs scored, and one stolen base over 273 plate appearances in 2021.
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Sam Coonrod (elbow) has been shut down from throwing for three days and still feels something in his right elbow. Coonrod went on the injured list on June 25 with tendinitis in his right forearm, but this could be a far worse development. With no current timetable for a return, it's possible that Coonrod may not be able to return later this season. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 4.18 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, two saves, seven holds and a 30/10 K/BB in 28 innings before he landed on the injured list. Coonrod wasn't much of an option before the injury, even in deep saves/holds leagues, and the Philadelphia bullpen has been a tough place to navigate once again in 2021.
The Philadelphia Phillies placed relief pitcher Sam Coonrod (forearm) on the 10-day injured list on Friday with right forearm tendinitis. The move is retroactive to June 24. In corresponding moves, infielder Nick Maton and right-hander Neftali Feliz were called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Right-hander David Hale was designated for assignment. On the year, Coonrod has a 4.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 24.8% strikeout rate, 8.3% walk rate, seven holds and two saves in 28 innings of work in relief. He's droppable in leagues that counts saves and holds. More notable for Philly's bullpen, Jose Alvarado will now get the first crack at save chances after Hector Neris has blown three of his last five save chances.
Sam Coonrod Takes Loss With Three-Run Eighth Inning Wednesday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Sam Coonrod allowed three runs to the Marlins to take the loss Wednesday. Tasked with protecting a one-run lead, Coonrod allowed three hits and a walk to blow his third save this season. Despite the bad outing, Coonrod is sporting a respectable 2.86 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 22 innings this season. Things change fast in the bullpen, however, and with Archie Bradley and Jose Alvarado both healthy again there's no guarantee Coonrod keeps his eighth-inning role. Hector Neris has been solid as the closer in Philly and is not in danger of losing the ninth-inning role so Coonrod can be left on waivers in fantasy.
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Sam Coonrod pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season Monday against the Brewers. Coonrod allowed two hits, but managed to preserve the one-run lead he was entrusted with. Hector Neris has been the primary closer for the Phillies and he may not have been available after recording a five-out save on Monday. Neris is still the reliever to roster in the Philly pen but it's encouraging to see Coonrod be trusted in higher leverage situations than when the season started. The right-hander has a 2.70 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP with a sterling .170 batting average against. He's worked his way into the fantasy baseball conversation in leagues that reward holds.
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-hander Sam Coonrod from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday in exchange for right-hander Carson Ragsdale, according to Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The 28-year-old Coonrod has made 51 career appearances for the Giants after being a fifth-round pick in 2014 out of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Coonrod had a 3.58 ERA while holding opponents to a .202/.336/.319 slash line in 33 relief outings in 2019. He ranked fifth in average fastball velocity (98.4 mph) among players who threw at least 50 four-seamers. In the shortened 2020 season, Coonrod had three saves and 15 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings in 18 relief appearances. Ragsdale was a fourth-rounder of the Phillies in 2020 out of South Florida.
Sam Coonrod Lands On Injured List To End 2020 Season
San Francisco Giants right-handed pitcher Sam Coonrod (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Saturday's contest versus the Padres due to a strained right shoulder. The move ends Coonrods 2020 campaign on a rough note after he allowed a walk-off home run Friday that would have nearly sealed a playoff spot for his club. He compiled a 9.82 ERA across 18 appearances while managing to record three saves and three holds. So long as the ailment is minor, Coonrod should return healthy for Spring Training and figures to be a part of the Giants bullpen heading into 21.
San Francisco Giants right-handed pitcher Sam Coonrod is dealing with a lat strain and has been placed on the 10-day injured list, with left-handed pitcher Sam Selman taking his spot on the active roster. Coonrod hasnt done much of note from a fantasy perspective this season, yielding three runs across 3 innings, walking more batters (three) than he has struck out (two). After vulturing five wins in 33 appearances in 2019, there was some thought that Coonrod could be an intriguing NL-only sleeper option amid a Giants pitching staff in flux. With the injury, he can be allowed to sit on the waiver wire.
