Nationals Hire Sean Doolittle As Pitching Strategist
The Washington Nationals hired former left-handed relief pitcher Sean Doolittle as a pitching strategist on Tuesday. The former two-time All-Star and World Series winner will serve as a liaison between the analytics department and pitching staff while also assisting the manager and pitching coach with strategy, mental preparation and mechanics for the team's pitching staff. The 37-year-old southpaw spent six years in D.C. with the Nats but retired last year after an 11-year big-league career. Doolittle ranks tied for third in Nationals history with 75 saves, and his 153 relief appearances are second-most by a Nationals pitcher since 2017 and 13th-most in Nationals history. He won the World Series in 2019 and finished his career going 26-24 with 112 saves, a 3.20 ERA and 522 K's in 450 2/3 innings pitched.
Left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle announced his retirement from professional baseball on his Twitter account on Friday. Doolittle didn't pitch at all in the majors in 2023 and made just six relief appearances in 2022 for the Washington Nationals due to elbow and knee injuries. He was originally a first-round pick (41st overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2007 out of the University of Virginia, and he spent 11 years in the majors pitching for the A's, Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners. The 36-year-old southpaw made the All-Star team twice, first in 2014 with the A's and again in 2018 with the Nats. Doolittle finishes a fine career with a 3.20 ERA (2.94 FIP), 1.01 WHIP, 112 saves and 522 strikeouts in 450 2/3 relief innings.
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) has moved his minor-league rehab assignment from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw is attempting to return from an internal-brace surgery on his left elbow, and so far he's allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out 10 in seven relief innings for High-A Wilmington, Single-A Fredericksburg and Harrisburg. He last pitched in 2022 for the Nats but only pitched in 5 1/3 innings before being shut down with injury. Doolittle should eventually provide veteran depth in Washington's bullpen in the second half of the season, but he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy option at this stage of his career.
Corey Dickerson Taking Swings, Sean Doolittle Throwing
Washington Nationals outfielder Corey Dickerson (calf) traveled with the team to Colorado and is taking light swings but not running yet. Relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) continues to throw off flat ground but hasn't gotten back on a mound yet. Dickerson was put on the 10-day injured list after straining his left calf last Saturday, and he's unlikely to be activated when he's eligible to return next week. In Dickerson's absence, Alex Call is seeing more playing time in left field. Doolittle had surgery last July to fix a partially torn UCL in his left elbow, and we're unlikely to see him in the big leagues until at least sometime in May.
Sean Doolittle, Tanner Rainey To Continue Rehabbing
Washington Nationals relief pitchers Sean Doolittle (elbow) and Tanner Rainey (elbow) will return to Florida to continue their respective elbow rehabs after the 2023 regular season begins. Doolittle is a little further along than Rainey, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. "He's building up strength, he's throwing," manager Dave Martinez said of Doolittle. "Actually he's throwing the ball really well. So hopefully we get him back soon. He's gonna go back and I think pretty soon he'll be throwing off the mound. But he's throwing the ball well. So I wanted him here. He's been through this before. He's gonna go to the (Homecoming) Gala with us. And I told him to stick around for Opening Day him and Rainey both. So they're going to be around for Opening Day and then they're going to take off and go back to Florida."
The Washington Nationals signed veteran left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle to a minor league deal on Sunday with an invitation to spring training next year. It gives Doolittle a chance to continue rehabbing while possibly returning next year to make an impact in the team's bullpen again. Doolittle had surgery on the UCL in his left elbow in July, a procedure that came with a recovery timetable of five to six months. Barring any setbacks for the 36-year-old southpaw this offseason, there's a chance that he'll be ready to go in spring training next year. It's unlikely that Doolittle will have a high-leverage role until later next season. He pitched in just 5 1/3 innings with Washington this year and didn't allow a run while striking out six.
Washington Nationals left-hander Sean Doolittle (elbow) will be undergoing season-ending UCL surgery. It will be an internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in the elbow of his throwing arm. His projected recovery timeline is five-to-six months, meaning that there's a chance he'll be ready to return to the mound by next spring. The 35-year-old made just six appearances this year, all coming in April. He allowed just one hit and no walks across 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out six along the way.
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) threw off the bullpen mound in Philadelphia on Tuesday. It marked the first time he threw off a mound since landing on the injured list with an elbow sprain back in April. The 35-year-old veteran only made six appearances this year prior to landing on the injured list. He was sharp over those six outings, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing one hit, no walks and no runs while striking out six. He will likely be utilized in a setup role once he's back, but it's still a bit unclear what type of timeline he's looking at.
Sean Doolittle Lands On Injured List With Elbow Sprain
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left elbow sprain. The team made three additional moves on Wednesday, optioning outfielder Donovan Casey to Triple-A and recalling pitchers Sam Clay and Francisco Perez to fill the two vacated roster spots. There's no word yet on the severity of Doolittle's injury. It's unfortunate timing for the 35-year-old as he had been off to a fantastic start to the year. He's pitched 5 1/3 innings this season and he's only allowed one hit without giving up a walk or a run.
The Washington Nationals signed free-agent relief pitcher Sean Doolittle to an undisclosed deal on Monday, pending a physical. The 35-year-old left-hander pitched for Washington from 2017-20 and was named to his second All-Star team with the Nats in 2018. Doolittle spent last season pitching for the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners, posting a combined 4.53 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and 23 walks in 49 2/3 innings over 56 relief appearances. The 10-year veteran has 112 career saves, but Doolittle hasn't been very successful over the last couple of seasons and has just one save in the last two years. Expect him to serve in more of a setup role in his return to D.C.
