JJ Bleday, Seth Smith On The Bench Against A Lefty
Oakland Athletics outfielders JJ Bleday and Seth Smith will retreat to the bench on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland Coliseum with a left-hander starting. Daz Cameron gets the nod in center field and will hit fifth for Oakland, with Tyler Nevin starting at first base and batting seventh against Rays left-hander Jeffrey Springs. Cameron and Nevin have a combined five career at-bats against Springs. Bleday has bounced back in his second year with the A's in 2023 to the tune of a .243/.326/.449 slash line with a career-best .775 OPS, but it hasn't moved the needle all that much in mixed fantasy leagues. He has added 17 home runs, 48 RBI and 59 runs scored in 125 games played. He hasn't been that good against southpaws, though, hitting .238 (19-for-80) with six of his 17 home runs against them. Bleday has looked good in August with four homers, three doubles, 11 RBI and a steal in 17 games.
Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos gave general manager Dan Duquette approval to seek trades for outfielder Seth Smith and the team's top relievers, which includes Zach Britton, Brad Brach and Darren O'Day, according to sources. The veteran Smith is hitting .260 with 10 home runs and 21 RBI and could be a valuable bat against righties for a contending team. He's only useful in deep mixed and AL-only leagues in the right matchups. Brach could be back in the ninth inning full time if the O's deal Britton at this year's deadline. Stay tuned.
It was a tough day for the Baltimore Orioles offense on Wednesday. Against Marcus Stroman and the Toronto Blue Jays, they mustered only five hits (all singles) in the loss. Trey Mancini and Seth Smith each went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while the rest of the lineup went 1-for-23. Power outages like this aren't too common for Baltimore; they scored 24 runs over their previous four games. They face another tough task on Thursday against J.A. Happ, who has thrown three straight quality starts. Despite this, keep your top Orioles bats locked into your lineups.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Seth Smith remains out of the Orioles lineup Thursday because of a stiff back, and if there is no improvement by the weekend, the O's might put Smith on the 10-day disabled list. The veteran outfielder has not played since Monday, and outfielder Joey Rickard is starting and leading off on Thursday. "It's more mid-back than lower back," manager Buck Showalter told reporters Thursday. "He's had some just general lack of range-of-motion." Smith has a .788 OPS this year and an .877 OPS over the last 14 days, but his main value is as a low-cost option in DFS.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Seth Smith had himself a nice game at the plate on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a solo home run in the seventh inning to bring Baltimore within one. During his fifth-inning at-bat, Smith fouled a ball that ricochet off the ground and hit him just under the left eye. He came up to bat in the seventh and hit that home run, but if he had to come up again in the ninth, he would have been unable to hit. The swelling had gotten so bad it caused his vision to blur. Smith is considered day-to-day until the swelling goes down. On the season, he is hitting .310 with a team-best .392 on-base percentage.
