A's Designate JJ Bleday for Assignment

The Athletics designated outfielder JJ Bleday for assignment on Tuesday, per Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Bleday has not lived up to the high expectations of being the fourth overall pick by the Miami Marlins in 2019 out of Vanderbilt. The left-handed-hitting outfielder spent one year in Miami before being shipped to the Bay Area. In his three seasons with the A's, he slashed an underwhelming .224/.313/.410 with a .723 OPS, 44 home runs, 126 RBI, 157 runs scored, and only eight steals in 339 games played. The Athletics are dropping him from their roster this offseason after he hit .212 (65-for-307) in 2025 with 14 long balls, 39 RBI, and 48 runs scored in 98 games played. The 28-year-old will enter free agency this offseason if he refuses his outright assignment to the minor leagues.

JJ Bleday Going Back to the Minors

The Athletics announced on Monday that they optioned JJ Bleday to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled outfield prospect Colby Thomas from Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Bleday is hitting just .191/.288/.358 on the season with a .645 OPS, eight home runs, 22 RBI, 30 runs, one stolen base and a 57:28 K:BB in 62 games in his third year with the team. After rejoining the big-league squad a month ago after a stay on the farm, the 27-year-old left-handed hitter started just nine of 26 games and hit .135/.273/.324 with a strikeout rate over 35 percent. The former first-rounder by the Miami Marlins in 2019 out of Vanderbilt did hit a career-high 20 home runs last year in Oakland, but he's quickly fallen out of favor with an A's team that isn't afraid to give their young prospects a shot the rest of the 2025 season.

JJ Bleday Rejoining the A's

The Athletics are recalling outfielder JJ Bleday from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Monday's series opener against the Minnesota Twins, a source tells MLB.com's Martin Gallegos. Bleday returns to the big leagues after making some adjustments at the plate at Triple-A Las Vegas, as he hit .370 (10-for-27) with a home run and a double in six games with the Aviators. It's unclear if Bleday will immediately rejoin the starting lineup for the A's in Monday's series opener against the visiting Twins and right-hander Joe Ryan in Sacramento. The 27-year-old former first-rounder was sent down after a rough start to the 2025 season in which he slashed just .204/.291/.365 with a .656 OPS, six home runs, 18 RBI, 26 runs scored and a steal in 167 at-bats. Outfield prospect Denzel Clarke was recently brought up when Bleday was demoted, but he has gone 5-for-28 with 18 K's in his first nine big-league games.

A's Send JJ Bleday to the Minors

In a flurry of moves made on Friday, the Athletics optioned outfielder JJ Bleday to Triple-A Las Vegas and designated outfielder Seth Brown for assignment, according to MLB.com's Martin Gallegos. The moves come as the A's cleared room for prospects Denzel Clarke and Logan Davidson, who are both top-30 prospects for the club, according to MLB Pipeline. For now, Clarke is expected to replace Bleday as the team's everyday center fielder after Bleday, the former fourth overall pick by the Miami Marlins in 2019 out of Vanderbilt, hit just .204/.291/.365 with six homers, 18 RBI, 26 runs and a steal in 167 at-bats to begin the 2025 season. The 27-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder should be back in the majors again at some point this year, but his fantasy stock will obviously take a big hit. Brown was hitting .192 (10-for-52) with a homer and three RBI as a part-time outfielder for the Athletics.

JJ Bleday Out Of Lineup Thursday

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday is out of Thursday's lineup against the Dodgers. Seth Brown is starting in center field instead. This is just a rare day off for the 27-year-old, who has played in 41 of the A's 43 games this season. He is slashing .216/.308/.399 with six home runs, 18 RBI, and 26 runs on the year. He remains a fine option in five-outfielder leagues thanks to his everyday playing time and counting stat accumulation.

JJ Bleday Homers Again In A’s Win, Power Surge Worth Watching

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 11-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bleday capped the blowout with a 402-foot homer in the ninth inning his sixth of the season and added an RBI single in the seventh. He has now gone deep in back-to-back games and is slashing .222/.315/.410 with a .725 OPS and .311 wOBA through 40 games this season. Bleday will look to continue his power surge in Game 2 against the Dodgers and should remain in lineups while he's swinging a hot bat.

JJ Bleday Homers In Second Straight Game

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Saturday's 9-6 loss to the Marlins. It was his fourth home run of the year, and he's now homered in back-to-back games. Hitting in the middle of the Athletics' lineup should continue to keep him relevant for fantasy, now with 13 RBI and 22 runs scored for the year as well. If the former first-round draft pick can improve upon his .231 AVG to go along with a strong 12.6 percent walk rate, then even more production could be in the offing, although a .214 xBA doesn't instill confidence that much improvement will be made, limiting his roster-worthiness to deeper fantasy leagues.

JJ Bleday Hits Second Home Run

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday went 1-for-4 with a two-run shot during Thursday's victory over the Chicago White Sox. Bleday would hit his second long ball of the campaign in the sixth inning off Chicago starter Davis Martin. His home run also scored Brent Rooker. Since posting a modest .167/.302/.194 slash line with a double and one RBI across the first 10 games of the campaign, Bleday has begun to turn the corner. Over his previous eight contests, the 27-year-old has posted a stellar .300/.353/.567 slash line with two doubles and two home runs. Under the hood, Bleday has shown a strong eye at the plate, drawing walks at a 13.0 percent rate and striking out at an 18.2 percent rate, which are both well above the average marks. Bleday remains a solid depth outfielder in all formats, given his everyday role.

JJ Bleday Homers, Drives In Three On Tuesday

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday turned in a big game in a 10-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Bleday went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, a walk, three runs, and three RBI to help power his team to the win. The veteran outfielder kicked off the scoring for the A's with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning and followed that up with a solo homer in the seventh inning. Bleday will hope his big day will get his bat going as he is off to a slow start this season, hitting just .209 with one homer, nine runs, and four RBI through 43 at-bats.

A's Don't Want To Trade JJ Bleday

The Athletics said at the winter meetings that they will not trade designated hitter Brent Rooker, and center fielder JJ Bleday also falls into that category, according to a source briefed on the team's thinking. The A's desperately want to add plays as they transition to playing their home games in a minor-league stadium in Sacramento in 2025, but they are also reluctant to trade the few quality players they have. Star closer Mason Miller perhaps could be on the trade block, but the A's would want a quality position player under long-term control in return. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal wrote earlier this year that if the San Diego Padres wanted Miller, the A's likely would have asked for outfielder Jackson Merrill. The A's are deep in outfield prospects, but they're looking for immediate big-league help, which the rest of the league is also doing.
