Edwin Arroyo, Cam Collier Assigned To Minor-League Camp
The Cincinnati Reds reassigned shortstop Edwin Arroyo and third baseman Cam Collier to minor-league camp on Wednesday. Additionally, the Reds sent right-hander Jose Acuna, catcher Michael Trautwein, outfielder Hector Rodriguez (No. 11) and infielder Ivan Johnson to minor-league camp. Arroyo (No. 5) and Collier (No. 4) are two of the team's top prospects and are also ranked by MLB Pipeline as top-100 prospects in all of baseball entering the 2025 season. Arroyo, 21, was never really expected to make Cincy's Opening Day roster after missing all of the 2024 campaign due to surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He will likely begin the year at Double-A Chattanooga. Collier, who is a year younger than Arroyo, also wasn't a realistic option to break camp on the big-league roster for Opening Day. He, too, should start 2025 at Chattanooga with Arroyo.
Cincinnati Reds shortstop prospect Edwin Arroyo (shoulder), who had season-ending surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder in spring training, is starting a game progression at the team's complex in Goodyear, Ariz., and is also scheduled to play in the Arizona Fall League. Arroyo injured his left shoulder in a March 13 Cactus League game against the San Francisco Giants when he dove back to first base on a pickoff throw. The 21-year-old is listed by MLB Pipeline as the team's No. 3 prospect. The Puerto Rican hit .252/.324/.433 with a .757 OPS, 13 home runs, 60 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 123 games with High-A Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga last year. Arroyo makes hard contact to all fields as a switch-hitter and could develop average power at a premium position. Speed will probably be his biggest asset in fantasy down the road. Don't expect him to make his MLB debut next year after losing all of this season.
Cincinnati Reds shortstop prospect Edwin Arroyo (shoulder), the team's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, had season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The 20-year-old injured the shoulder diving back to first base last week in a Cactus League game and will now miss all of 2024. It's a tough break for one of the team's top prospects after he went 6-for-17 with three RBI in spring training action. When he returns in 2025, Arroyo will most likely be ticketed for Double-A Chattanooga. The 6-foot switch-hitter hits balls hard to all fields and should develop more power as he matures, but his development is going to be put on hold this year. The Puerto Rican product hit .252/.324/.433 with 13 homers, 60 RBI and 29 steals in 123 games last year with High-A Dayton and Chattanooga.
