Reds Place Tony Santillan on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Cincinnati Reds announced on Friday that they placed right-handed reliever Tony Santillan (oblique) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 23) with a strained left oblique and recalled right-hander Zach McCambley from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. Although Santillan has an ERA over 5.00 with a 1.39 WHIP in 31 innings in 2026 in his sixth year in the league, he has been pitching much better of late and has been manager Terry Francona's go-to guy in the ninth inning with the game on the line, with right-hander Emilio Pagan (hamstring) still on the IL. Santillan took the loss in his inning of work on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers in his last outing, but before that, he had a stretch of seven straight scoreless appearances in which he walked none, struck out six, and picked up three saves. When Santillan returns from his oblique strain (likely after the All-Star break next month), Pagan should be back, which means he probably won't be a candidate for save opportunities. Until Pagan returns, Francona could turn to either Tejay Antone or Brock Burke for saves. UPDATE: Francona said that an MRI exam showed that Santillan is dealing with a significant strain in his left oblique, per FOX 19's Charlie Goldsmith.

Tony Santillan Emerging as High-End Short-Term Source for Saves

Cincinnati Reds right-handed reliever Tony Santillan tossed two shutout innings on Sunday against the Yankees to earn his sixth save of the season in nine opportunities. It was a crisp two innings for Santillan, as he did not allow a base runner and needed only 16 pitches to record six outs, and 11 of those were strikes. Santillan has had opportunities of late to close out games due to Emilio Pagan (hamstring) landing on the 15-day injured list. Pagan is throwing right now, as he completed live batting practice in a simulated game on Friday, but is likely still going to do a few rehab assignments, meaning Santillan has the opportunity to close out games for another few weeks, so long as he continues to produce. Santillan, on the season, has not been sharp; he owns a 5.10 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, but has clearly become the preferred arm to close games, as the next closest arm for save opportunities is Sam Moll with four chances. Although it may not be pretty, in leagues where saves are scarce, Santillan is worth a look in the short term simply based on opportunity.

Tony Santillan Bounces Back for Third Save, Still the Closer to Roster in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan picked up his third save of the season on Saturday against the Diamondbacks, working a perfect ninth inning to protect a one-run lead. He retired the side in order on three groundouts, throwing 10 of 14 pitches for strikes while navigating the heart of Arizona's lineup. It was Santillan's first save since May 19, and he remains the only pitcher on the Reds aside from the injured Emilio Pagan (hamstring) with multiple saves this season. With Pagan still sidelined, he figures to retake the closer role when he's ready to return. Still, until then, Santillan has been the most reliable option in high-leverage situations. The 29-year-old is probably the most likely Reds pitcher to get any save chances that come up in the near term. Santillan is currently rostered in just 9% of Yahoo leagues, making him worth a look for managers chasing saves while Pagan remains out.

Is Tony Santillan Still the Top Source for Saves in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan has put together arguably his worst MLB season so far in 2026, recording a 5.88 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 25 strikeouts across 26 innings. However, with Reds closer Emilio Pagan (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain, Santillan has two saves on the year and may be Cincinnati's preferred option in the ninth inning. There are major red flags in Santillan's profile that fantasy managers should be aware of before buying in. The 29-year-old's average fastball velocity is down from 96.2 miles per hour in 2025 to 94.6 mph in 2026, and his K-BB rate has dipped from 15.3% to 10.3%. He's also allowed nine home runs (3.12 HR/9) on the year and pitches in one of the most homer-friendly home parks in all of baseball in Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park. Fantasy managers in desperate need of saves may still have use for Santillan, but his profile is riddled with risk.

Tony Santillan Stumbles in Save Opportunity, Safe to Cut in All Leagues?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan started the ninth inning for the Reds on Sunday with a three-run lead over the Atlanta Braves and faltered, recording only two outs and allowing two hits, one walk, and one earned run. He threw 18 pitches, 10 of which were for strikes, and Sam Moll came in to record the final out and pick up the save. Since Emilio Pagan (hamstring) landed on the injured list in early May, the closer role for the Reds has been in flux, with Santillan receiving most of the opportunities, but he has now blown three saves on the season, and only converted on two of them. He owns a 5.56 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and a 23.4 percent strikeout rate with an 11.7 percent walk rate. It has not been announced yet, nor have the Reds made it clear that Santillan has lost the role as the ninth-inning guy, but his production certainly suggests the Reds may look elsewhere, making him a strong drop candidate for fantasy managers heading into Week 11.

Tony Santillan Blows Third Save for Reds, Time to Cut Ties?

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan suffered another setback Saturday, blowing a save opportunity in an eventual extra-inning win vs. the Chicago Cubs. Santillan allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks, including a home run in the ninth inning. The 29-year-old has now blown three saves this season and continues to trend in the wrong direction after surrendering nine earned runs over his last seven appearances. Opposing hitters have consistently punished mistakes in the strike zone, and Santillan's 10.2 Barrel/PA rate is the highest mark of his career by a wide margin. The Reds may begin exploring alternative late-inning options if the struggles continue, making Santillan a risky fantasy investment for managers chasing saves.

Tony Santillan Earns Second Save on Tuesday, Back on the Closer Radar?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan worked a clean and efficient inning on Tuesday to secure a 4-1 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies. Santillan needed just 10 pitches to earn his second save of the season while striking out two batters. The save was his first since April 18 and came after he blew two save opportunities over the last month. The 29-year-old posted a 2.31 ERA in April but has struggled in May, allowing eight earned runs across 5 1/3 innings. Tuesday's outing marked a positive step forward for Santillan, and his career 3.24 ERA suggests he can still provide value in late-inning situations for Cincinnati.

Tony Santillan Pitches in Seventh Inning on Friday, Falling Out of Closer Committee

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan appeared in the seventh inning of his team's 7-6 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, pitching a scoreless inning with a strikeout. The scoreless inning was a welcome change for Santillan, who had given up eight earned runs across five appearances in May leading into Friday. However, the 29-year-old still owns a 5.50 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP so far this season and appears to have fallen out of the closer mix in Cincinnati as the team looks to replace the injured Emilio Pagan (hamstring). Right-hander Tejay Antone picked up his first save of the season against Cleveland and could be worth a look for fantasy managers on the waiver wire.

Tony Santillan Sees Closer Value Drop After Four-Run Outing

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tony Santillan was expected to be one of the team's top options to fill in for injured closer Emilio Pagan (hamstring), but he has not helped his case in his recent outings. On Friday, he worked in a non-save situation against the Astros and failed to record an out while giving up four runs on four hits, including two home runs. He only threw 13 pitches before exiting after back-to-back homers by Zach Cole and Christian Vazquez. Santillan blew a save opportunity on Tuesday as well, giving up a home run to Michael Busch in the ninth. His ERA has ballooned to 5.17 on the season, and he has allowed five homers in his last five innings with a 16.20 ERA over that span. With Santillan struggling, Graham Ashcraft will probably get the next chance to close out a game with a save, although he blew his last opportunity as well. Both Santillan and Ashcraft project to split save opportunities in the short term, making both relievers best left for 12+ team leagues.

Tony Santillan the New Closer to Roster in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan appears to be getting the bulk of the save situations, making him an intriguing closer option in fantasy baseball. The Reds continue to use Santillan in leverage scenarios, and while it has backfired with a blown save and a loss in his last two games, he still appears to be the frontrunner for the role. The Reds used Graham Ashcraft in a save situation on Wednesday, but he blew it, too. Outside of a minor rough patch, Santillan has been effective, posting a 2.87 ERA with 9.19 K/9. He does need to work on limiting walks (5.17 BB/9) and loud contact (1.72 HR/9 and 35.9% GB%). With Emilio Pagan out until late June, it seems like the Reds will just roll with Santillan as their de facto closer. He has jumped to #32 among relievers in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.
