Elly De La Cruz News
Cincinnati Reds top prospect Elly De La Cruz is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster in 2023 with only 47 games played above Single-A ball, but he'll still draw plenty of attention in spring training. The shortstop/third baseman is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 14 prospect in all of baseball, so De La Cruz will be closely followed in the minor leagues again next season. As of now, Jose Barrero, Kevin Newman and Matt Reynolds will be the ones competing for the starting shortstop job for the Reds entering the 2023 campaign. De La Cruz, a switch-hitting 20-year-old, slashed a combined .304/.359/.586 with a .945 OPS, 28 home runs, 86 RBI, 87 runs scored and 47 stolen bases in 120 games with High-A Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga in 2022.
Cincinnati Reds shortstop prospect Elly De La Cruz went 2-for-5 with a solo home run for Double-A Chattanooga on Saturday. De La Cruz, one of the Reds top prospects was promoted to Double-A on July 22 and hasn't missed a beat since his ascension. On the season, the 20-year-old is hitting .297 with 22 homers, 56 RBI and 32 stolen bases between High-A and Double-A. The Reds have a flurry of top shortstop prospects that includes Matt McLain in Double-A, but he has been shifted to second base to accommodate De La Cruz. The club also acquired shortstops Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo from the Mariners in the Luis Castillo trade, but it appears they are devoted to keeping De La Cruz at shortstop for the time being. Regardless of where he winds up on the diamond, De La Cruz offers across the board talent and he continues to open eyes at every level. The Reds have no reason to promote him this season, but there is a true chance that he could make his big-league debut at some point in 2023 for the rebuilding Reds and dynasty-league managers should start taking note on the prospect.
Cincinnati Reds infield prospect Elly De La Cruz has been promoted from High-A Dayton to Double-A Chattanooga. The 20-year-old is currently ranked by MLB Pipeline as the team's No. 2 prospect -- behind left-hander Nick Lodolo -- and as the No. 49 overall prospect in the majors. Over 73 games at High-A this year, De La Cruz slashed .303/.360/.609 with 20 home runs, 28 stolen bases, 52 RBI and 53 runs. He appeared in this year's Futures Game and went hitless in his only at-bat.
