Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tejay Antone (elbow) has been working out near his home in Texas by lifting weights and undergoing physical therapy after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and arm surgery to fix tears in his UCL and flexor mass tendon on April 12. Antone has been feeling good and is not in pain and is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam and ultrasound exams in October to gauge his progress. If everything looks good, he could be cleared to start throwing with weighted plyometric balls. This is the second Tommy John surgery of the 30-year-old's career. He did not pitch at all in 2022 and has thrown a combined 7 2/3 frames in the big leagues with the Reds the last two seasons due to injuries. If healthy in 2025, Antone could provide valuable bullpen depth for Cincy after posting a 2.47 career ERA with three saves and 96 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings.

Tejay Antone Needs Another Elbow Surgery
Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that reliever Tejay Antone (elbow) will have another elbow surgery this Friday after he tore the tendon off the bone while also suffering a partial ligament tear. Antone has already had Tommy John surgery twice in 2017 and 2021. The Reds officially placed him on the 15-day injured list on Monday and recalled right-hander Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. It's another tough blow for the 30-year-old right-hander and the Reds' bullpen. Because of setbacks from his last Tommy John surgery, Antone has only appeared in nine games for the Reds since 2021. He's not going to make it back in 2024 and probably won't be ready for the start of the 2025 season, either.

Tejay Antone To Undergo MRI
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (elbow) was pulled early during Sunday's appearance against the New York Mets. The 30-year-old was only able to throw one pitch before exiting the game due to elbow discomfort. Following the game, Reds' manager David Bell said Antone will undergo an MRI on Monday. This is a tough blow to the Reds bullpen, assuming Antone is forced to miss time. Fantasy managers will have to check back on Monday for another update on his status.

Tejay Antone Healthy In Camp
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (elbow) is going through a normal spring training this year for the first time in three years. Antone had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and had multiple setbacks since, including one before last season. He also dealt with elbow tendinitis that put him on the injured list at the end of 2023. The 30-year-old right-hander is in camp trying to win a spot in Cincy's bullpen this spring after making just five appearances out of the bullpen for the team last year. Antone debuted in the major leagues with the Reds in the shortened 2020 season but has only thrown 74 2/3 innings over 41 appearances (five starts) in that time, posting a strong 2.41 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with three saves, 31 walks and 94 strikeouts. He has the stuff to be a high-leverage reliever, but expect the Reds to ease him in if he makes the Opening Day bullpen.

Tejay Antone Suffering From Elbow Discomfort
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (elbow) left his outing on Wednesday night against the Detroit Tigers with right-elbow discomfort. Before leaving, Antone allowed a walk and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning to pick up his first hold of the season. That's where the good news ends. The 29-year-old recently made his 2023 debut after returning from Tommy John surgery, so more elbow pain is a pretty ominous sign for the reliever. Antone came into Wednesday's outing having thrown just five innings out of the Cincy bullpen after making his season debut on Sept. 2. There's a good chance he'll need a trip to the injured list, and it wouldn't be a surprise if we didn't see him again until spring training in 2024.

Tejay Antone Could Have Rehab Assignment Extended Again
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tejay Antone (elbow) worked a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout for Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 16, which was his 12th minor-league rehab appearance. Antone and the Reds recently agreed to extend his rehab assignment by 10 days as he works his way back from a second Tommy John surgery, and manager David Bell didn't rule out another extension. "He's doing well. No decision has been made yet. He is feeling good and pitching well," Bell said. The 29-year-old reliever had Tommy John surgery back in August of 2021 and then suffered a right flexor strain last winter. In 11 2/3 innings of rehab in the minors this year, he's allowed seven earned runs on 14 hits (two homers) while walking four and striking out 12.

Tejay Antone Begins Rehab Assignment
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (elbow) started a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday at the Arizona Complex League. If everything goes smoothly, he is projected to return to Cincy's big-league bullpen by Aug. 19, according to manager David Bell. Antone is working his way back from a second Tommy John procedure that he had last year, and he also had a setback along the way with a sore right shoulder. Considering how long the 29-year-old has been out, it makes plenty of sense for him to be on a rehab assignment for as long as possible, potentially up to 30 days. It's unlikely that Antone will have fantasy value, if any at all, for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. He hasn't pitched since last August.

Tejay Antone Throws On Tuesday
Cincinnati Reds reliever Tejay Antone (forearm) threw a side session on Tuesday, according to MLB.com, and if there continues to be no issues, there's a chance he could return to the club on August 19. The right-hander has missed all of 2023 and 2022 as he's recovering from Tommy John surgery and a flexor strain in his right forearm. Over 33 2/3 innings in 2021, Antone pitched to a 2.14 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 32.8% strikeout rate with three saves and eight holds. The closing job is out of reach, as Alexis Diaz has flourished in that role, but if the 29-year-old can be as effective as in the past, there's a good chance the team will use him as a late-inning arm.

Tejay Antone To Miss First Half Of Season
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (forearm) had a setback with his right elbow and likely will not be ready to pitch in the first half of the 2023 season due to a flexor strain in his right forearm. It comes after he missed all of last season while recovering from a second Tommy John surgery. Antone received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Tuesday. The 29-year-old was one of the Reds' best relievers in 2021, posting a 2.14 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 23 appearances while walking 13 and striking out 42. Alexis Diaz is projected to serve as Cincinnati's closer this year, and Lucas Sims and Reiver Sanmartin will have even bigger setup roles now with Antone likely out for the entire first half. Sims pitched in just six games in 2022 due to a back injury that required surgery.

Tejay Antone Dealing With Flexor Strain
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tejay Antone (elbow) shared on Twitter Tuesday that he will not be ready to pitch at the start of the regular season. The 29-year-old missed the 2022 season recovering from Tommy John surgery but announced that he received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection for a flexor strain, saying that he would be ready for the second half of the 2023 season. Antone has only pitched 69 innings in his career but has posted a solid 2.48 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 32.3% strikeout rate. He has the stuff of a potential closer, but fantasy managers will need to see him pitch while healthy before he can even be considered.
