Chase Burns on a Roll of Late With 17 Strikeouts in Last Two Starts

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Chase Burns is starting to break out in 2026 after flashing signs in 2025. So far this season, Burns is (3-1) with a 2.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. His fastball velocity remains elite (98.1 mph average), and his control remains in check (8.8 percent walk rate), while he continues to miss bats and rack up the strikeouts (28.5 percent). Burns is primarily a two-pitch pitcher, throwing his four-seamer 56 percent of the time and slider 37 percent of the time, but both pitches are excellent and top-tier (.230 batting average on the four-seamer and .140 batting average on the slider). Most encouragingly, Burns has shown a lot of consistency through his six starts, having gone five innings in every outing, while allowing two earned runs or less in all but one start on April 10, where he allowed five earned runs to the Angels and was his only loss of the season. Up Next for Burns is an excellent matchup on Sunday, May 3, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he should be fired up confidently in your lineups.

Chase Burns Tosses Five Shutout Innings in Win on Monday

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitcher Chase Burns allowed zero runs, one hit, and three walks over five innings of work during his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. He struck out seven batters along the way and ultimately earned the win. Burns was cruising, but given that it was his first outing of the regular season, manager Terry Francona pulled him after just 78 pitches. His fastball velocity averaged out to 98.3 mph, consistent with his velocity numbers from his rookie season in 2025. The 23-year-old continues to be an impressive starting pitching option in fantasy baseball, ranking #37 among starters in RotoBaller's latest rankings. He'll return to the mound on Sunday, April 5, against the Texas Rangers.

Chase Burns to Start March 30 Against Pirates

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitching prospect Chase Burns is scheduled to make his first start of the 2026 season on Monday, March 30, against the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Rich Rovito of MLB.com. Burns made his sixth and final start of spring training on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers and went five efficient innings while throwing 53 of his 68 pitches for strikes. He struck out the side in the first inning with a four-seam fastball, slider, and sinker combination. Burns allowed four hits (one homer) and two runs while striking out seven and walking none. Now that left-hander Nick Lodolo (finger) is starting on the injured list, each of Burns, Rhett Lowder, and Brandon Williamson will take turns in the Reds' rotation to begin the regular season. Burns, a hard-throwing 23-year-old and former second overall pick, has as much fantasy upside as any young pitcher in the game as he heads into his first full year in the big leagues. He's RotoBaller's No. 36 fantasy starting pitcher after fanning 67 batters in 43 1/3 innings in his major-league debut in 2025.

Chase Burns Makes Opening Day Roster, Role Remains in Question

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Chase Burns has made the team's Opening Day roster, according to Charlie Goldsmith of FOX 19. Starting pitchers Rhett Lowder and Brandon Williamson also made the squad, giving the Reds six starters for a five-man starting rotation. Burns, Lowder, and Williamson are some of the team's best young pitchers, so it will allow them to rotate them through the final two spots in the rotation to help with their inexperience and recent injury history. RotoBaller has the hard-throwing 23-year-old ranked as the No. 43 starting pitcher already because of his elite strikeout potential. Burns might not be a regular starter with a turn every five days right out of the gates in 2026, but if he performs, he could quickly become a staple for Cincy in their rotation. The former second overall pick in 2024 out of Wake Forest made his big-league debut in 2025 and had a 4.57 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 67 K's and 16 walks in 43 1/3 innings over 13 outings (eight starts). Burns has as high a ceiling as any young arm in baseball.

Chase Burns Possibly Starting the Year at Triple-A?

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns was removed from his start this past Friday after throwing just 24 pitches. Manager Terry Francona has stated that Burns is fully healthy despite the early hook, and although that still seems to be the case, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, the team "didn't like how Burns' arm was moving" during the outing, so they wanted to address it immediately. With just a week and a half left before the regular season gets underway, it sounds like the 23-year-old still has mechanical adjustments to make, and he may not be stretched out as much as other guys competing for rotations spots are, including Rhett Lowder and Brandon Williamson, so Burns could very well be ticketed for Triple-A to begin the season. The right-hander had an impressive debut in 2025 in which he posted a 4.57 ERA (2.65 FIP) and recorded 67 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings pitched, but starting the year in Triple-A would certainly dampen his fantasy outlook. For a pitcher that has been going fairly high in fantasy drafts the last couple of weeks (ADP 120 overall), managers who haven't drafted yet should take a more cautious approach and keep an eye out for any developments.

Chase Burns is Fully Healthy Ahead of the Regular Season

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns is fully healthy as the 2026 MLB regular season approaches, according to manager Terry Francona. Burns threw a limited pitch count during spring training action on Friday, but Francona explained that the reduced workload was a result of him "working through some of his routines and stuff." Burns reportedly put in plenty of work over five days leading up to his spring training appearance, which led to a shorter outing on Friday. He could experience similar workload management during the regular season, with Charlie Goldsmith of FOX19 speculating that Burns might not consistently approach 100 pitches during his starts this year. Nevertheless, the Reds are confident that Burns is healthy and will be a staple in their starting rotation throughout the regular season. He's trending upward after a 2025 rookie campaign in which he posted a fantastic 2.65 FIP with 13.92 K/9 and 3.32 BB/9.

Chase Burns has Uneven Command in Spring Training

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns has contended to flash immense upside throughout the early part of spring training, but has still struggled to command his pitches. Over his first 4 1/3 innings of work, the hard-throwing right-hander has walked five batters while striking out seven. He has surrendered only one run and held a modest 1.62 WHIP. Last summer, Burns made his MLB debut and had a similar outcome, posting an elite 35.6% K% but carrying a 4.57 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. However, under the hood, Burns generated a much lower 3.48 xERA with a .218 xBA, suggesting he may have gotten a bit unlucky during his first stint in the majors. Managers should continue to monitor his progress in camp, as his short-term upside could take a hit if he continues on this trajectory. Nonetheless, the former No. 2 overall pick is a prime breakout candidate in 2026, given his expected workload and immense strikeout potential.

Chase Burns Poised for 2026 Breakout?

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitcher Chase Burns got his first taste of the big leagues in 2025, posting an 0-3 record with a 4.57 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 67 strikeouts across 43 1/3 innings pitched (13 games, eight starts). Burns worked as a starter for his first eight appearances with Cincinnati before suffering an elbow injury that caused him to miss just over a month. Upon his return in early September, Burns worked out of the bullpen and aided Cincinnati's late-season playoff push. Entering 2026, the 23-year-old appears ticketed for a spot in the starting rotation. While his surface-level numbers as a rookie don't jump off the page, Burns's elite 35.6% strikeout rate is indicative of his significant upside. Opponents also hit .360 against Burns, which is a number that could easily regress in 2026. Given his age and considerable strikeout upside, Burns profiles as a borderline fantasy SP2 heading into his second MLB season.

Chase Burns Officially Back From Injured List

The Cincinnati Reds announced on Thursday that they reinstated rookie right-hander Chase Burns (elbow) from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handers Lyon Richardson and Yosver Zulueta from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. Burns, who was the second overall pick in last year's draft out of Wake Forest, has made eight starts for the Reds in his first MLB season in 2025, but he is expected to pitch out of the bullpen to help a struggling Cincy relief corps when the team resumes play on Friday in Sacramento against the Athletics. The 22-year-old missed a month of action with a Grade 1 right flexor strain and did not go on a minor-league rehab assignment. Don't expect the Reds to use him in a ton of high-leverage spots, which means he's going to lose significant fantasy value the rest of this year. Burns had a 5.24 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with a 57:13 K:BB before his injury.

Chase Burns to Work Out of Bullpen in Return

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitching prospect Chase Burns (elbow) will not serve as a starter when the team activates him from the 15-day injured list on Friday. Rather, Burns told Brian Giesenschlag of Reds Live that he'll receive "scheduled innings out of the bullpen" for the rest of the season. The Reds are playing it safe with Burns, out since Aug. 12 with a Grade 1 flexor tendon strain, in an effort to limit his workload. Just a year removed from going second overall in the draft, the flamethrowing Burns has combined for 101 1/3 innings between the majors and Triple-A this season. Burns has made eight starts and amassed 34 1/3 frames with the Reds, and while his 5.24 ERA is uninspiring, much of the damage came in one disastrous outing against the Boston Red Sox on June 30. Overall, Burns has demonstrated why he's among the premier pitching prospects in the sport, having already fanned double-digit hitters in four starts and totaled an eye-popping 57 strikeouts. The 22-year-old could be a weapon out of the bullpen for the Reds as they attempt to chase down a wild-card spot.
