Eugenio Suarez Slowly Ramping Up From Oblique Injury

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez's oblique injury is around 50% better, according to FOX 19's Charlie Goldsmith. He took 50 swings on Thursday and will now cool it down for the next few days. Goldsmith mentions that Suarez's injury is one that you have to be patient with. The veteran right-handed slugger is dealing with a left-oblique strain and isn't exactly close to returning to the major-league roster after being placed on the 10-day injured list. The 34-year-old Venezuelan infielder is still 89% rostered in Yahoo leagues, though, for his power stroke in a hitter-friendly home ballpark in Cincy. The two-time All-Star tied a career high with 49 home runs while driving in a career-high 118 runs in 159 games last year with the Reds and Seattle Mariners. Before his oblique injury this year, Suarez was hitting .231 (21-for-91) with three homers, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored in 25 games. Suarez won't boost your batting average, but the 13-year veteran is still capable of being a power- and run-producing asset in mixed fantasy leagues when he's healthy and playing every day. Left-handed-hitting first baseman Nathaniel Lowe should continue to benefit from regular playing time in Cincy between first and designated hitter with Suarez on the shelf.

Eugenio Suarez Does Some Baseball Activities on Monday

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said that third baseman Eugenio Suarez (oblique) was scheduled to take grounders on the field on Monday and flips in the cage, according to Charlie Goldsmith of FOX 19. Suarez will get an MRI exam in Cincinnati coming up. If the Reds like what they see from Suarez's MRI later this week, the 34-year-old veteran could be cleared to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's currently on the 10-day injured list with a left-oblique strain, and the Reds are bringing the right-handed slugger along slowly. The Venezuelan third baseman has had at least 30 home runs and 101 RBI in each of his last two seasons, and he tied his career-high with 49 long balls in 2025 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners in 159 total games. Suarez swings and misses plenty, though, so he will not help your batting average. In 25 games in his return to Cincy this year, Suarez has hit .231 (21-for-91) with three home runs, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored. Barring a setback, Suarez should return to the Reds by mid-May.

Eugenio Suarez Still Dealing with Tender Oblique

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said that third baseman/designated hitter Eugenio Suarez (oblique) is still dealing with a tender oblique, per Charlie Goldsmith of FOX 19. Goldsmith reports that the team is hoping Suarez "progresses to the point where he can get scanned on (the team's) upcoming road trip and then really ramp up baseball activities." Suarez's oblique strain was characterized as low-grade when he was placed on the injured list retroactive to April 23, but it appears as though the veteran slugger will require more than the minimum 10 days on the IL. Suarez was off to a slow start to 2026 before getting injured, hitting .231/.300/.363 with three home runs, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored across 100 plate appearances. With Suarez on the shelf, Reds first baseman Nathaniel Lowe has stepped in as the team's primary designated hitter.

Eugenio Suarez Heading to the Injured List With Oblique Strain

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said on Friday that third baseman Eugenio Suarez (oblique) is going on the injured list with a low-grade oblique strain, according to Charlie Goldsmith of FOX 19. Goldsmith adds that Suarez will hopefully be down for five or six days before potentially building back up. The Reds said that the 34-year-old veteran was dealing with mid-back pain when he was scratched from the lineup before Friday's game. Even though Suarez's oblique strain is classified as a low-grade injury, there's a good chance he'll miss more than the minimum 10 days on the IL. While Suarez is away, the left-handed-hitting Nathaniel Lowe will most likely see most of the playing time as the Reds' designated hitter against right-handed pitching. When healthy, Suarez is a solid source of power in his return to the Reds this year. Before his injury, he was hitting .231/.300/.363 with three home runs, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored in 100 plate appearances across 25 games played.

Eugenio Suarez Scratched on Friday With Mid-Back Pain

Cincinnati Reds third baseman/designated hitter Eugenio Suarez (back) has been scratched from the starting lineup on Friday for the game against the Detroit Tigers due to mid-back pain, according to Charlie Goldsmith of FOX 19. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe will serve as the team's designated hitter and bat sixth against Tigers left-hander Framber Valdez. Although Lowe has plenty of experience in his career against Valdez -- he's hit .269 against him with an .867 OPS, one home run, and three RBI in 26 at-bats -- fantasy managers in DFS will probably want to fade him in the lefty-lefty matchup. For now, we'll consider Suarez day-to-day. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Saturday to see if he's available to play in Game 2 of the series. The 34-year-old Venezuelan veteran has hit .231 (21-for-91) so far in his return to Cincy in 2026 with three homers, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored in his first 25 games. Make sure you remove Suarez from your starting lineups on Friday.

Eugenio Suarez's Slow Start to 2026 a Sign of Age-Related Decline?

Fresh off a 49-homer campaign in 2025, veteran third baseman/designated hitter Eugenio Suarez agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Cincinnati Reds before the 2026 season. The 34-year-old hasn't quite gotten his power bat working through his first 100 plate appearances this year, as he's hitting .231/.300/.363 with three home runs, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored. Suarez's barrel rate is down from 14.3% to 8.6%, while his hard-hit rate currently sits at a career-worst 20.7%. Suarez has a long history as both a prodigious and streaky power hitter, so it's too early for fantasy managers to panic. He also has the benefit of playing his home games in the hitter-friendly environment of Cincinnati, so he could easily get hot as the weather starts to heat up. Still, signs of age-related regression for Suarez are worth monitoring as he enters his mid-thirties. The Reds also have several potentially capable corner infield/designated hitter options, so Suarez could eventually start to lose some playing time if his production remains merely middling.

Red Sox Did Not Pursue Eugenio Suarez in Free Agency

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Boston Red Sox did not play a "meaningful role" in third baseman Eugenio Suarez's free-agent market. On Sunday evening, the slugging third baseman inked a one-year deal to return to Cincinnati. The Pittsburgh Pirates were also in heavy pursuit, but it appears the Red Sox did not make a strong push to upgrade their infield. The Red Sox were linked to several of the top infielders this winter but have been unsuccessful in their free-agent search. With Suarez off the board, the Red Sox could still look for a trade candidate or enter camp with Marcelo Mayer slated to cover third base. Last season, Mayer made his MLB debut and held a modest .228/.272/.402 slash line with four long balls. However, he showed significant upside as he progressed through the Boston system. If he were to open the season as the team's No. 1 third baseman, he would have solid sleeper appeal in deeper formats.

Pirates Offered $15 Million to Eugenio Suarez

The Pittsburgh Pirates were reportedly making a big push for free-agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez. According to Jason Mackey, the Pirates offered Suarez the same AAV ($15 million) as the Cincinnati Reds. Ultimately, Suarez decided to go to the Reds due to familiarity with the organization and a better ballpark fit. This is the second big-time slugger the Pirates have struck out on this offseason. They also made a significant offer to Kyle Schwarber, but he decided to return to the Philadelphia Phillies. It's unclear where the Pirates will go now that Suarez has signed elsewhere. The Pirates may pivot to Marcell Ozuna, Rhys Hoskins, or maybe a reunion with Andrew McCutchen.

Eugenio Suarez Signs One-Year Deal With Reds

The Cincinnati Reds have signed free-agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez to a one-year deal on Sunday. They've agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal, which includes a mutual option for the 2027 season. Suarez heads back to Cincinnati after playing for the Reds from 2015-2021. It's a bit shocking that it took this long for Suarez to sign, given his offensive numbers from last season. He slashed .228/.298/.526 with 49 home runs and 118 RBI in 159 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. The expectation is that Suarez will spend most of his time at designated hitter. Ke'Bryan Hayes is a much better defender, so he'll likely continue playing every day at the hot corner. The addition of Suarez is bad news for Sal Stewart, who will likely see a reduced role now. Fantasy managers know what to expect from Suarez at this point. He'll strike out nearly 200 times and post an ugly slash line, but will hit for a ton of power.

Eugenio Suarez Not Drawing Interest on Open Market?

Free agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez's market isn't very strong, according to a report from Jim Bowden of The Athletic. He says that Boston and Pittsburgh make the most sense for Suarez, but at the moment, teams haven't done anything more than kick the tires on him. When speaking with a league source, Bowden asked why a non-contender wouldn't try to sign Suarez and trade him at the deadline in July. He was told that Suarez barely fetched any sort of return when he was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Mariners amidst a 49-homer campaign last summer, and given the lack of interest in the third baseman this offseason, it's unlikely that any contender would be willing to acquire him for a significant prospect haul in the summer of 2026. To put it simply, teams are hesitant to sign Suarez, even though he slugged 49 home runs last year. The power is indisputable, but he's not a major on-base threat, and last year's 7.0% walk rate and 29.8% strikeout rate are both concerning. Furthermore, he played average-at-best defense, contributing -0.7 fWAR in the field and -3 OAA. We may see Suarez garner a little more interest as spring training gets closer and teams finalize their rosters, but as it stands, his options in free agency are limited. The 34-year-old currently ranks as the #8 third baseman in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball draft rankings, and he'll likely rise or fall a couple of slots once he signs somewhere.
