Tony Santillan Blows Third Save for Reds, Time to Cut Ties?

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan suffered another setback Saturday, blowing a save opportunity in an eventual extra-inning win vs. the Chicago Cubs. Santillan allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks, including a home run in the ninth inning. The 29-year-old has now blown three saves this season and continues to trend in the wrong direction after surrendering nine earned runs over his last seven appearances. Opposing hitters have consistently punished mistakes in the strike zone, and Santillan's 10.2 Barrel/PA rate is the highest mark of his career by a wide margin. The Reds may begin exploring alternative late-inning options if the struggles continue, making Santillan a risky fantasy investment for managers chasing saves.

Tony Santillan Earns Second Save on Tuesday, Back on the Closer Radar?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan worked a clean and efficient inning on Tuesday to secure a 4-1 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies. Santillan needed just 10 pitches to earn his second save of the season while striking out two batters. The save was his first since April 18 and came after he blew two save opportunities over the last month. The 29-year-old posted a 2.31 ERA in April but has struggled in May, allowing eight earned runs across 5 1/3 innings. Tuesday's outing marked a positive step forward for Santillan, and his career 3.24 ERA suggests he can still provide value in late-inning situations for Cincinnati.

Tony Santillan Pitches in Seventh Inning on Friday, Falling Out of Closer Committee

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan appeared in the seventh inning of his team's 7-6 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, pitching a scoreless inning with a strikeout. The scoreless inning was a welcome change for Santillan, who had given up eight earned runs across five appearances in May leading into Friday. However, the 29-year-old still owns a 5.50 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP so far this season and appears to have fallen out of the closer mix in Cincinnati as the team looks to replace the injured Emilio Pagan (hamstring). Right-hander Tejay Antone picked up his first save of the season against Cleveland and could be worth a look for fantasy managers on the waiver wire.

Tony Santillan Sees Closer Value Drop After Four-Run Outing

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tony Santillan was expected to be one of the team's top options to fill in for injured closer Emilio Pagan (hamstring), but he has not helped his case in his recent outings. On Friday, he worked in a non-save situation against the Astros and failed to record an out while giving up four runs on four hits, including two home runs. He only threw 13 pitches before exiting after back-to-back homers by Zach Cole and Christian Vazquez. Santillan blew a save opportunity on Tuesday as well, giving up a home run to Michael Busch in the ninth. His ERA has ballooned to 5.17 on the season, and he has allowed five homers in his last five innings with a 16.20 ERA over that span. With Santillan struggling, Graham Ashcraft will probably get the next chance to close out a game with a save, although he blew his last opportunity as well. Both Santillan and Ashcraft project to split save opportunities in the short term, making both relievers best left for 12+ team leagues.

Tony Santillan the New Closer to Roster in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan appears to be getting the bulk of the save situations, making him an intriguing closer option in fantasy baseball. The Reds continue to use Santillan in leverage scenarios, and while it has backfired with a blown save and a loss in his last two games, he still appears to be the frontrunner for the role. The Reds used Graham Ashcraft in a save situation on Wednesday, but he blew it, too. Outside of a minor rough patch, Santillan has been effective, posting a 2.87 ERA with 9.19 K/9. He does need to work on limiting walks (5.17 BB/9) and loud contact (1.72 HR/9 and 35.9% GB%). With Emilio Pagan out until late June, it seems like the Reds will just roll with Santillan as their de facto closer. He has jumped to #32 among relievers in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Is Tony Santillan the Favorite to Take Over the Closer Job in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tony Santillan has seen his fantasy value spike following the injury to Emilio Pagan. During Tuesday's loss to the Cubs, Pagan exited the contest on a cart due to a hamstring injury. The right-hander is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list, which will open up ninth-inning duties for Santillan. While Santillan may face some competition from fellow setup man Graham Ashcraft, the 29-year-old appears to be the slight favorite to earn the short-term save opportunities. This season, Santillan has tallied one save while posting a 2.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Pitching primarily in the eighth innings of games, Santillan has logged eight holds while striking out 16 batters over 15 2/3 innings. While he has struggled recently, allowing five earned runs over his last five innings, his track record of seeing eighth-inning opponents should make him the slight favorite for the ninth-inning role. He is worth adding in all 12-team leagues while Pagan is on the shelf.

Tony Santillan Poised to Slide Into Closer Role for Reds?

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tony Santillan is emerging as a key ninth-inning arm, recording three save opportunities over his last seven games. He has struggled with consistency at times in this role, but his 2.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP make him a strong candidate to close games given Emilio Pagan's recent injury. On Tuesday evening, Pagan was carted off the field with a hamstring injury and is slated to be placed on the 15-day injured list. Santillan is in his sixth season with the Reds and is coming off the best year of his career in 2025, posting 33 holds, seven saves, and a 2.44 ERA. He has clearly earned the trust of the coaching staff as his usage continues to increase. If his stuff plays in the ninth inning, the closer role could soon belong to him, making him a solid target in all 12-team leagues.

Tony Santillan is Emerging as Top Closer Handcuff

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tony Santillan was handed the ball with a one-run lead against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Closer Emilio Pagan (hamstring) pitched on Friday, but the team decided to play it safe and hold him out on Saturday night. Instead, Santillan got the ball and looked sharp on the mound. The right-hander tossed a scoreless inning while striking out two batters to earn his first save of the season. Santillan has yet to allow an earned run across 10 innings of work this season. He appears to be the favorite to get saves if the Reds decide to make a switch. Santillan is an interesting stash option given Pagan's struggles to begin the season.

Tony Santillan the Priority Handcuff in Reds Bullpen?

Cincinnati Reds reliever Tony Santillan is off to a strong start to the 2026 season, as he's recorded 10 strikeouts and has yet to allow an earned run across his first eight innings pitched (eight games). With the news that Reds closer Emilio Pagan (hamstring) is being evaluated for a hamstring injury, Santillan could be in line to assume the ninth-inning role in Cincinnati. The 29-year-old was one of the Reds' best high-leverage arms in 2025, recording a 2.44 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 75 strikeouts across 73 2/3 innings (80 games). Santillan also picked up seven saves and has 11 saves in his big-league career, so he has some experience as a closer. If Pagan ends up missing time, Santillan would immediately become a priority target on the waiver wire for fantasy managers.

Tony Santillan Earns One-Out Save Monday

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Tony Santillan picked up his first save of the season in Monday's 2-0 win over the Giants. Santillan entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning up by two with two outs and runners on first and second. He allowed hard contact to Heliot Ramos, but the game ended on a diving catch by Jacob Hurtubise. Santillan is now one of three Reds relievers to see a save opportunity and he has yet to allow a run in 5 2/3 innings of work to go with seven strikeouts and three holds. Manager Terry Francona alluded to Santillan being a potential option for saves at the beginning of the season, but he also expressed that Santillan may be best suited in a fireman's role. He may not be a consistent source of saves, but Santillan has pitched well out of the bullpen throughout his career and may be the best bullpen arm the Reds currently have, making him worth a look in deeper roto leagues.
