Outfielder Shogo Akiyama has signed a three-year deal with the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's NPB. Akiyama was released by the Cincinnati Reds prior to the start of the 2022 MLB season. He played in 142 games for the Reds over the last two years and hit .224/.320/.274 while racking up nine stolen bases, 21 RBI and 32 runs. The 34-year-old played for the Saitama Seibu Lions in the NPB for about a decade before signing with the Reds. He had a number of prolific seasons in the NPB while compiling a .301/.376/.454 slash line.
The Cincinnati Reds released outfielder Shogo Akiyama on Tuesday. Akiyama declined to be optioned to Triple-A Louisville after being informed that he wouldn't make the Opening Day roster, so the Reds cut him. The 33-year-old Japanese outfielder hit a disappointing .224/.320/.274 with no home runs, 21 RBI, 32 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 366 plate appearances over 142 games in his two seasons with the Reds. Akiyama can play solid defense and can run a little bit, though, so he could latch on elsewhere as outfield depth. But he remains well off the fantasy radar.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama has been informed that he won't make the Opening Day roster. The 33-year-old outfielder has the right to refuse his assignment to Triple-A. Akiyama has the right to elect free agency, but it's uncertain if he'd draw much interest in free agency. He hit .224/.320/.274 with no homers, 21 RBI, nine stolen bases and a 74/39 K/BB between two seasons in Cincinnati. It seems unlikely that Akiyama would offer much fantasy value anywhere he lands.
The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain on Saturday. The 33-year-old is batting .204 with a .282 on-base percentage and a pair of stolen bases in 183 plate appearances this season. Cincinnati also placed fellow outfielder Jesse Winker on the 10-day injured list. The Reds figure to use some combination of Max Schrock, Delino DeShields Jr., Aristides Aquino, and TJ Friedl in the outfield alongside Nick Castellanos with Akiyama and Winker on the injured list.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, an RBI, and a steal in a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. It has been a slow season for Akiyama, who has found himself as the fourth outfielder thanks to an early-season injury and hot starts by outfielders Jesse Winker, Nick Castellanos, and Tyler Naquin. Naquin has cooled down significantly after an excellent start to the season, however, hitting just .244 with three homers over his past 30 games. Akiyama could start to cut into Naquin's playing time in the second half if his bat can heat up. On the year, Akiyama is hitting .224 with nine runs, seven RBI, and two steals in 85 at-bats.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama went 3-for-4 with three singles and two RBI in a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Akiyama notched an RBI single in the second and eighth innings during the win. The veteran outfielder has been red-hot since getting activated from the injured list last week. Akiyama is hitting .286 with two runs and two RBI in 21 at-bats for the Reds. He should continue to see relatively regular playing time now that Nick Senzel is needed in the infield because of the thumb injury to Joey Votto. Akiyama is worth a look in deep, NL-only leagues going forward.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) has been activated from the injured list and will make his season debut on Friday night against the Indians. Akiyama started off the season on the injured list after suffering a hamstring injury while running the bases during Spring Training. He's a light-hitting outfielder, slashing .245/.357/.297 in 54 games in 2020, but his biggest asset will be his speed as he was 7-for-10 in stolen base opportunities as a rookie last season. His value will be limited to NL-only or deep-mixed leagues, but for managers in those leagues that are looking for steals, he should be a decent option to target.
Shogo Akiyama Continues To Rehab At Alternate Site
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) continues to progress at the team's Louisville alternate training site. Manager David Bell said that Akiyama pretty much has no restrictions, although he has intentionally not been running at 100 percent intensity yet. "We're pushing him a little bit harder now," Bell said. "He's going to start playing in games in the next 7-10 days. He's getting live at-bats, he's doing everything but the game action. Still on track for the first week of May -- if everything continues to go well, [he'll] rejoin us sometime in early May." The 33-year-old slashed .245/.357/.297 last year and will rejoin a crowded outfield picture that includes Aristides Aquino, Nick Castellanos, Tyler Naquin, Nick Senzel and Jesse Winker when he returns to the big leagues.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) is reportedly making progress as he rehabilitates his left hamstring strain. Akiyama injured the hamstring about three weeks ago during a Cactus League game and opened the season on the injured list. He is being assigned to the team's alternate training site in Louisville as he works his way back from the injury. Akiyama said on Saturday, through a translator, "I've been walking. I've been also running and utilizing the machines as well. I've been using my legs and also applying pressure in different places." The Reds have yet to set a return date for Akiyama but he could be back in action by the end of the month.
Shogo Akiyama Will Open The Season On Injured List
The Cincinnati Reds announced on Monday that outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) will open the regular season on the injured list. Akiyama felt something while running the bases during Saturday's Cactus League game against the Oakland A's. Through his translator, Akiyama said, "I heard something before I landed on the base, and after I landed on first base, it felt like I lost some power." He missed the early portions of camp while away from the team to deal with personal matters and went 0-for-7 in his four Cactus League games. Akiyama's injury could open up a spot for one of Tyler Naquin, Dee Strange-Gordon, or Scott Heineman to make the Opening Day roster.
