The New York Yankees signed right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, left-hander Tyler Lyons and outfielder Socrates Brito to minor league deals on Sunday. Chacin has 12 major league seasons under his belt and has thrown 1,324 innings, including 226 starts. The 33-year-old has a 6.06 ERA (75 ERA+) in 108 1/3 innings with the Brewers, Red Sox and Braves the last two seasons. But he had a 3.86 ERA (112 ERA+) from 2009-18 with the Rockies, Diamondbacks, Braves, Angels, Padres and Brewers. The 32-year-old Lyons has a lifetime 4.30 ERA in 162 outings (20 starts) for the Cardinals, Pirates and Yankees. Brito has put up a slash line of just .179/.216/.309 with five home runs in 218 career plate appearances for the Diamondbacks and Blue jays, but the 28-year-old has blazing speed and can play all three outfield positions.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Socrates Brito is back in summer camp on Saturday after he confirmed his positive COVID-19 diagnosis. Brito is just hoping to somehow crack the team's Opening Day roster, but his late arrival to camp will make that even more of a long shot. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter was decent on the farm in the Blue Jays organization last year, but he has a career .179/.216/.309 slash line with only five home runs, 18 RBI and three stolen bases in 99 games with the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays. Even if he were to make Pittsburgh's roster, Brito would be nothing more than outfield depth at the big league level.
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired outfielder Socrates Brito from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday in exchange for minor league outfielder Rodrigo Orozco. The 26-year-old Brito might actually have more of a chance at playing time in Toronto than he did in San Diego. He's a career .202/.229/.351 hitter in 82 games over three seasons with the Diamondbacks and shouldn't be on the fantasy radar unless he comes into regular playing time with his new team.
The San Diego Padres claimed outfielder Socrates Brito off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Unfortunately for Brito, he was in a much better situation to see playing time in Arizona than he will be with his new team. The 26-year-old has hit .202/.229/.351 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 82 games with the Diamondbacks in three professional seasons. Expect him to be sent to the farm for organizational depth.
Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Chris Owings (finger) and outfielder Socrates Brito (pinkie) are slightly behind their teammates in camp, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Owings needed a second surgery on his fractured right middle finger in November, but he's on track for Opening Day. Brito injured his finger in winter ball in the Dominican and is "a little behind everybody else." Owings profiles as a super-utility player for the Snakes this year, but he doesn't walk enough to provide a strong average for owners. Owings has decent power and speed, though, so if he manages to win the starting second base job, he could be worth targeting in deeper leagues. Brito has never really been healthy in the major leagues, but he could win the fourth outfield job this spring. Brito doesn't bring much to the table for fantasy owners at the plate.
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Socrates Brito (pinkie) may have suffered a fractured right pinkie finger while playing for Estrellas in the Dominican Republic. He'll undergo further examination before a diagnosis is made. Brito dislocated his left ring finger in spring training last year and missed the first 2 1/2 months of the season. He managed to hit .291/.336/.449 in 78 games for Triple-A Reno during the 2017 season. He'll head to spring training next year fighting for a backup outfield spot in Arizona.
