Spencer Turnbull News
The Detroit Tigers expect right-hander Spencer Turnbull to enter the 2024 season as a starting pitcher. "We expect him to prepare as a starter this offseason and show up to Lakeland ready to compete for a job in our rotation," president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. Turnbull only made seven starts for Detroit in 2023, going 1-4 with a rough 7.26 ERA (5.55 FIP), 1.68 WHIP, 15 walks and 24 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched after missing all of the 2022 campaign due to Tommy John surgery. He made eight starts on the farm and wasn't effective down there, either. If the 31-year-old has a regular offseason and shows up healthy to spring training in 2024, he could be in line for a bounce-back season in what could be his final year with the Tigers.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull (neck) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and subsequently optioned to Triple-A Toledo. The right-hander missed the entirety of the 2022 season following May 2021 Tommy John surgery and made just seven starts with the Tigers in 2023 before hitting the shelf. Those seven outings did not go Turnbull's way, however, as he turned in a 7.26 ERA across 31 innings of work while posting a minuscule 6.2% K-BB% in that time. His rehab assignment didn't go as planned, either, as Turnbull posted a 7.71 ERA across four starts with Toledo after tossing a solid 3.60 ERA across a pair of starts at High-A. It appears the Tigers will give Turnbull some additional time in the minors to get things turned around.
Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull (neck) will make minor-league rehab starts for High-A West Michigan on Tuesday and Sunday this week, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Turnbull will take the next step in his rehab after facing live hitters for a week. The 30-year-old will most likely need several more rehab starts after this week to build up his arm since he's been sidelined since early May. After his two starts for West Michigan this week, the Tigers will most likely move him to either Double-A Erie or Triple-A Toledo. Turnbull won't be guaranteed a starting-rotation spot in Detroit when he's healthy, as he was 1-4 with a rough 7.26 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 31 innings over seven starts before his injury.
