Royals Agree With Starling Marte

The Kansas City Royals agreed to an undisclosed deal with free-agent outfielder Starling Marte on Saturday, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The deal is pending a physical. Marte is heading into his 15th season in the big leagues and shouldn't be expected to see regular playing time in Kansas City. At best, he'll serve as an outfield/designated-hitter option off the bench against left-handed pitchers. The 37-year-old two-time All-Star hit a solid .270/.335/.410 with a .745 OPS in 98 games with the New York Mets last year, but it came with only nine home runs, 34 RBI, 37 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 329 plate appearances. Volume definitely isn't going to be there for Marte, even if he stays healthy. Marte hasn't played in over 100 games since 2022, when he was an All-Star for the second time in his career. Speed has always been Marte's biggest tool for fantasy managers, but he hasn't stolen over 30 bags since 2021.

Royals Discussing Deal With Starling Marte

The Kansas City Royals are talking to free-agent outfielder/designated hitter Starling Marte about a possible deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. If Marte were to land in Kansas City, he'd be a right-handed option in the outfield to face left-handers and give either Jac Caglianone or Kyle Isbel a day off. The 37-year-old Dominican veteran is better suited to be a full-time designated hitter at this point in his career, though. Injuries have been an issue for Marte, who is nearing the end of what has been a very successful 14-year career in the big leagues. Marte hasn't played over 98 games in each of the last three seasons with the Mets, although he was an All-Star for the second time in his career in 2022. He has always made a lot of contact and has six seasons of 30-plus steals, but he can't be counted on for much power or speed at this point in his career with limited playing time.

Starling Marte Takes a Seat on Thursday

New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (rest) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs. This appears to be a routine rest day for Marte who has started in each of the last two games. During that time, Marte has gone 1-for-8 at the plate with one run scored. That being said, it's not a terrible idea to give the veteran slugger the night off. In his absence, Mark Vientos will serve as the designated hitter while Brandon Nimmo covers left field against left-hander Shota Imanaga.

Francisco Alvarez, Starling Marte Sitting Against Braves

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and outfielder/designated hitter Starling Marte will both get the day off for Thursday's contest against the division-rival Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. Luis Torrens will be behind the plate and hit ninth, while Ronny Mauricio will serve as the DH and bat out of the seven-hole against Braves right-hander Bryce Elder. It's a good day for Alvarez to take off after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in another disappointing loss on Wednesday. Marte has been swinging it well of late and is currently riding a modest four-game hitting streak (7-for-17 with two homers). Since returning from a stay in the minors, Alvarez has swung it well, going 14-for-50 (.280) with three home runs, four doubles, a triple and eight RBI in 17 games played since July 21. Neither Torrens nor Mauricio have ever faced Elder in their careers.

Starling Marte Generating Trade Interest

New York Mets designated hitter/outfielder Starling Marte has drawn trade interest leading up to the July 31 deadline, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. There's no word on whether the Mets are interested in giving up Marte, who leads the team with 50 appearances at DH this season. The 36-year-old is now in a timeshare at the position with Mark Vientos. Set to become a free agent at the end of the season, Marte has batted an effective .275/.356/.395 with four home runs, 20 RBI, 22 runs scored, and five stolen bases in 192 plate appearances.

Starling Marte Back From Injured List

The New York Mets announced on Tuesday that they reinstated outfielder/designated hitter Starling Marte (knee) from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Jared Young to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. It's unclear if Marte will enter the starting lineup right away for Tuesday's contest against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. The 36-year-old veteran is skipping a minor-league rehab assignment after missing the last two weeks with a bruise in his right knee. Marte will most likely see most of his playing time moving forward out of the DH spot for the Mets, and at this point in his career, he probably shouldn't be counted on as an everyday player. Before his injury, he was batting a solid .270 (44-for-163) but with only four home runs, 20 RBI, 22 runs and five steals. Fantasy managers also can't count on Marte running much anymore.

Starling Marte Should Rejoin Mets This Week

New York Mets outfielder/designated hitter Starling Marte (knee) should come off the 10-day injured list and rejoin the team this week, per manager Carlos Mendoza. Marte still needs another couple of days, but he most likely will not require a minor-league rehab assignment before returning. Barring a setback for the 36-year-old veteran over the next couple of days, he could rejoin the Mets before Friday's series opener in San Francisco against the Giants. Jesse Winker (back) is also on the IL, but when Marte returns, he might be relegated to the short side of a platoon at designated hitter against left-handed pitching for New York. The Dominican outfielder may no longer be an everyday player at this stage of his career, even though he was hitting .270 (44-for-163) before his knee bruise. Marte has only four homers and rarely runs these days (five steals), either.

Starling Marte Should Return by End of July

New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (knee) won't be back as quickly as the team had initially hoped, but The Athletic's Tim Britton says that he should return by the end of July. Marte has taken batting practice, though, so his return isn't all that far off, barring a setback. The 36-year-old veteran has recovered slowly from a knee bruise and will probably serve mostly as the designated hitter when he returns in the second half. Fantasy managers also shouldn't be expecting him to run much after stealing just five bases in 58 games in the first half of the season. Marte has swung the bat well with a .270 average (44-for-163), but he has only four home runs, 20 RBI and 22 runs scored in 188 plate appearances before injuring his knee. Without much speed upside these days, Marte has a much lower fantasy ceiling and floor.

Starling Marte Nearing Return, But Rehab Delayed

New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (knee) is progressing toward a return from the injured list, but his bruised right knee is healing slower than expected. Although eligible to return Friday, he will need more time before rejoining the club. The 36-year-old has quietly posted a solid .353 OBP this season, though his four homers and five steals leave much to be desired. While not a game-changer, Marte's on-base ability makes him a viable bench stash in deeper fantasy leagues. Fantasy managers should monitor his status and prepare for a return in the coming weeks.

Starling Marte Expected to Return After All-Star Break

New York Mets designated hitter/outfielder Starling Marte (knee) underwent an MRI on his right knee that yielded "very good" results, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters. The Mets expect Marte to return after the All-Star break, which suggests he'll miss the minimum amount of time after going on the 10-day injured list July 7 with a knee bruise. Marte has gotten the lion's share of work at DH for the Mets and batted .270/.353/.387 with four home runs, 20 RBI, 22 runs, and five stolen bases in 188 plate appearances.
