Thomas Szapucki Returns To Giants On Minor-League Deal

The San Francisco Giants re-signed left-hander Thomas Szapucki to a minor-league deal after non-tendering him on Nov. 17. Szapucki had thoracic outlet surgery in May and hasn't pitched in a competitive setting since 2022 due to his shoulder injury. The 27-year-old southpaw appeared in 12 major-league games (one start) in 2021 and 2022 with the New York Mets and Giants, allowing 18 earned runs on 26 hits (eight home runs) while walking 10 and striking out 22 in just 13 2/3 innings. Shoulder injuries like his are pretty unpredictable, so Szapucki may not be ready health-wise to open the 2024 minor-league season.

Thomas Szapucki Optioned To Minors

New York Mets starting pitcher Thomas Szapucki has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. The left-hander made his MLB debut against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. Sadly, he allowed nine runs and couldn't get through the second inning. It appears the Mets are optioning Szapucki, so he can continue making improvements in the minors. Right-hander Yoan Lopez is expected to take over the roster spot, but nothing official has been announced yet.

Thomas Szapucki Needs Season-Ending Surgery

New York Mets left-hander Thomas Szapucki (elbow) will need season-ending ulnar nerve transposition surgery, according to sources. The team's 10th-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, made his major league debut last month but has had trouble with injuries early in his career. Szapucki has already had Tommy John surgery, but the Mets expect him to be ready next spring. The 25-year-old southpaw allowed six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his big league debut against the Atlanta Braves on June 30. Before the call-up, he had a 4.10 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 41/28 K/BB in 10 outings (nine starts) over 41 2/3 innings with Triple-A Syracuse. Szapucki features a low-90s heater and an impressive curveball, but he'll have to continue his development early next season. It's looking more likely that he'll be ticketed for a relief role in the future.

Thomas Szapucki Roughed Up In Relief Appearance

New York Mets left-hander Thomas Szapucki, the team's 10th-ranked prospect, made his MLB debut on Wednesday in relief of starter David Peterson. Szapucki was roughed up, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings pitched in the Braves 20-2 rout. He also struck out four batters. Despite the rough outing, Szapucki holds promise in dynasty formats. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 but pitched well across three minor league levels in 2017 and 2019. In 2021, with Triple-A Syracuse, he posted an uneven 4.41 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, and 38/22 K/BB in 34 2/3 innings in eight outings (seven starts) before his call up to the Mets.

Jerad Eickhoff DFA'd, Thomas Szapucki Called Up

The New York Mets designated right-hander Jerad Eickhoff for assignment on Tuesday and called up pitching prospect Thomas Szapucki in a corresponding move. Szapucki, the team's 10th-ranked prospect, will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game. Eickhoff's time in the big leagues came to an end when he allowed five earned runs on eight hits (four home runs) in six innings in his start on Monday against the Washington Nationals. Szapucki, a 25-year-old left-hander, had a 4.41 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 38/22 K/BB in 34 2/3 innings in eight outings (seven starts) for Triple-A Syracuse. The southpaw has a nice fastball-slider combination, but he needs to prove more before fantasy managers can rely on him if he makes any starts for the Mets.

Thomas Szapucki, Franklyn Kilome Added To Player Pool

The New York Mets added pitchers Thomas Szapucki, Franklyn Kilome, Jordan Humphreys and Stephen Gonsalves to their 60-player pool on Tuesday, according to a source. Per MLB Pipeline, Szapucki is the team's No. 7 prospect, while Kilome comes in at No. 12 and Humphreys at No. 14. Szapucki, a left-hander, returned from Tommy John in 2019 and had a nice 2.63 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 in 61 2/3 innings for Single-A Columbia, High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton. At the very least, the southpaw could find a bullpen role with the Mets down the line. If he can stay healthy, though, Szapucki has a chance to remain a starter at the major league level. It's unlikely that any of the four players added will see any time in the big leagues in 2020.
