Tigers Claim TJ Hopkins Off Waivers From Giants

The Detroit Tigers claimed outfielder TJ Hopkins off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday and designated left-hander Kolton Ingram for assignment in a corresponding move to make room for Hopkins on the 40-man roster. Detroit will be the third team that Hopkins has been with this offseason. The 27-year-old made his major-league debut in 2023 and went 7-for-41 (.171) with no home runs, one RBI, one stolen base and seven runs scored in 25 games. However, he was much better at Triple-A Louisville, slashing .308/.411/.514 with a .924 OPS, 16 home runs and 55 RBI in 94 games over 393 plate appearances. Hopkins will most likely open the 2024 campaign as minor-league outfield depth for the Tigers at Triple-A Toledo.

Giants Acquire T.J. Hopkins From Reds

The San Francisco Giants acquired outfielder T.J. Hopkins from the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The move comes after the Reds designated Hopkins for assignment last week. The 26-year-old will now head to the Giants organization, where he'll serve as minor-league outfield depth to open up the 2024 season. Hopkins, who throws and swings right-handed, made his big-league debut in 2023 for the Reds and went 7-for-41 (.171) with no home runs, one RBI, two walks and 17 strikeouts in 25 games played. He was much better at Triple-A Louisville, slashing .308/.411/.514 with a .924 OPS, 16 home runs, 55 RBI and 63 runs scored in 393 trips to the plate over 94 games.
