Tommy La Stella News
San Francisco Giants infielder Tommy La Stella (Achilles) was activated from the injured list on Monday and was in the starting lineup for the first time this season on Monday against Colorado Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela, serving as the designated hitter while batting eighth in the batting order. La Stella is making his season debut after having surgery on his right Achilles last October. The 33-year-old veteran hit .310 with two home runs in nine minor league rehab games, and he should be a lineup regular for the Giants against right-handed pitching, giving him some deep mixed and NL-only value for his power stroke from the left side of the plate.
San Francisco Giants infielder Tommy La Stella (Achilles) hit a grand slam in his seventh minor league rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento last Friday and went 2-for-2 as the designated hitter on Sunday, putting him in line to potentially return from the injured list this week. La Stella has been squaring the ball up in the minors, hitting .310 with two home runs and seven RBI since he began his rehab assignment on May 3. The 33-year-old had surgery on his right Achilles back in October of last year and has yet to make his 2022 debut because of setbacks this spring. Once he return, the veteran infielder will be a part-time player with modest pop off the bench for the Gigantes.
San Francisco Giants second baseman Tommy La Stella (Achilles) began his rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. He went 1-for-3 with a single in the game. La Stella underwent surgery on his Achilles last October and is the midst of working his way back. The left-hander slashed .250/.308/.405 with seven home runs, 27 RBI and 26 runs over 77 games with the Giants last year. Once he's back in the majors, we should see him split time at the keystone with Thairo Estrada, who has a .247/.286/.376 slash line over 23 games this year.

It took six major league seasons before San Francisco Giants journeyman infielderTommy La Stellafound his stroke. In 2019 in only 292 at-bats, La Stella hit .295 with 16 home runs and 44 RBI. Unfortunately, a leg injury ended his career year with the Angels. While he may never repeat his '19 production, there were a few gains which carried over into 2020 and should also continue in 2021. His contact rate skyrocketed. It jumped to 91% in 2019 and surged to 95% last year. His walk rate in 2020 of 12% was above his career average, and his ground-ball rate plummeted to just 40% (from 53% in 2018). While his upside is limited and everyday playing time won't be guaranteed, La Stella has a low probability of being a bust at his ADP. As a member of the Giants, consider La Stella as a middle infielder in deep mixed formats.
