Trent Thornton Records First Save Wednesday

Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton recorded his first save of the season (and of his career) in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Rays. He wasn't the first choice in the ninth, but Andres Munoz walked the first two batters he faced and then hit a batter, prompting a pitching change. It is a situation to monitor, as Munoz has also been used in the eighth inning if the situation calls for it, allowing others to record saves, namely Ryne Stanek. Thornton doesn't figure to get many more opportunities, but should the opportunity arise, the 30-year-old has been solid this season, posting a 3.22 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 20.3% K-BB%.

Mariners Acquire Trent Thornton From Blue Jays

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-handed reliever Trent Thornton from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy, according to sources. The move comes after the Blue Jays designated Thornton for assignment last week when Toronto acquired reliever Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander came up as a starting-pitching prospect for the Jays, but he's worked mostly in relief since 2021. He pitched in just 5 1/3 innings at the big-league level for Toronto this year and he has a 4.77 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 98 walks and 249 strikeouts in 260 1/3 major-league innings in the last five years over 108 appearances (35 starts). Thornton won't suddenly have any fantasy value with the move to the American League West.

Trent Thornton Recalled On Sunday

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trent Thornton was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. The 28-year-old righty will replace Tim Mayza (shoulder), who landed on the 15-day injured list with a dislocated shoulder, in the Jays bullpen. Thornton, who was just optioned to Triple-A back on July 30, owns a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 30:15 K/BB ratio over 38 innings with Toronto this year.

Trent Thornton Recalled On Saturday

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trent Thornton has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. The 28-year-old reliever, who's gone back and forth between the majors and the minors this year, will provide some bullpen depth for the Jays moving forward. He owns a 4.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 29:15 K/BB ratio over 37 innings (26 appearances) this season. Rookie Max Castillo was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Trent Thornton Optioned To Minors

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Trent Thornton has been optioned to the minors on Wednesday. The 27-year-old righty pitcher will head to Triple-A Buffalo after posting a 4.78 ERA over 37 2/3 innings with the Jays this season. The Jays recently acquired right-hander Trevor Richards, so Thornton was the odd man out. There's a good chance that Thornton will return again at some point, but won't be worth stashing.

Blue Jays Going With Trent Thornton As Opener On Monday

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that Trent Thornton is going to start Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He will serve as an opener. Ross Stripling, who was previously slated to start, will likely work in relief. Thornton has been solid over 14 appearances (two starts) this year, posting a 2.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Stripling, on the other hand, has had a disastrous season, going 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over six starts. There's a good chance that he's lost his spot in the rotation for now, though the Blue Jays haven't officially announced that to be the case.

Trent Thornton Solid In Relief, Eyed For High-Leverage Work

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Trent Thornton pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball during the club's 3-2 loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Kansas City Royals. The right-hander allowed two hits but he struck out two batters and threw 17 of his 25 pitches for strikes (68%). After the game, manager Charlie Montoyo said he has been impressed with Thornton this season and will be using the former starter in high-leverage situations moving forward. The club is currently without other high-leverage relievers Jordan Romano (ulnar neuritis) and Julian Merryweather (oblique) due to injuries.

Trent Thornton, Tim Mayza Make Jays Roster

Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Trent Thornton (elbow) and Tim Mayza (elbow) were informed that they will be with the club on opening day. Both players are returning from surgeries and were on the outside looking in when camp began. Thornton had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow last fall while Mayza underwent Tommy John surgery in the fall of 2019 and missed all of last season. He'll likely be mostly a one-inning pitcher for the Jays and could eventually see high-leverage innings as the club will not name a closer in the wake of Kirby Yates' surgery. Thornton threw more innings than any Jays starter in 2019 but appeared in just three games last year. He will serve as the long man out of the bullpen, according to manager Charlie Montoyo.

Trent Thornton Strikes Out Three Batters

In just his second game since returning from September elbow surgery to remove "loose bodies," Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trent Thornton (elbow) held the New Yankees scoreless for three innings. The 27-year-old right-hander has now thrown five shutout innings with just three hits allowed and a K-BB of 7-1. His heater was ranging from 91-93 mph. His strikeouts came on sliders (twice) and a changeup. If Thornton can build up enough stamina to break camp with the Jays, he could provide some valuable depth to the pitching staff which recently lost Kirby Yates (elbow) for the year and Nate Pearson (groin) for an undetermined amount of time.

Trent Thornton Returns to Action

Toronto Blue Jays pitcherTrent Thornton(elbow) pitched his first game of the spring on Friday. He had been recovering from an injury that caused him to appear in just three games in 2020. The right-hander threw two no-hit, shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers. Thornton struck out four batters while touching 93.8 mph with his fastball and sitting at 91-92 mph. He threw 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes. Just two years ago, the 27-year-old led Toronto pitchers in games started (29) and innings pitched (154 1/3) as a rookie. A healthy, resurgent Thornton would be a huge boost for Toronto. The club is currently without pitchers Nate Pearson and Thomas Hatch due to injuries.
