Trent Thornton Out of Walking Boot; Aims for Early 2026 Return

Seattle Mariners right-hander Trent Thornton (Achilles) is out of his protective walking boot as he continues to recover from a torn left Achilles tendon. The 32-year-old underwent surgery on August 5 after being placed on the injured list four days earlier. The recovery timeline is expected to be around six to eight months, putting Thornton on track for a possible return by 2026 spring training. He has remained in good spirits while supporting his team during their postseason run. Thornton finished the regular season with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP across 42 1/3 innings.

Trent Thornton Suffers Torn Achilles

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Trent Thornton (Achilles) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday. Thornton will miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a torn left Achilles during Thursday's game. He'll finish his 2025 season with a 4.68 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a 32/14 K/BB ratio across 42.1 innings of work. This is going to be a lengthy recovery, so Thornton will likely miss most of the 2026 campaign as well. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jackson Kowar was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

Trent Thornton Carted Off the Field on Thursday

Pitcher Trent Thornton (leg) went down with a lower-leg injury in the ninth inning of Thursday's game and was carted off the field. He collapsed when coming off the mound, attempting to cover first base on a grounder to the right side, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. It appears that Thornton is scheduled for an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the injury, which will help the Mariners determine the timeline for Thornton's return to the mound. The incident appeared to be a freak accident, and the Mariners and Thornton are hoping for the best. Thornton owns a 4.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 42 innings pitched this season. UPDATE: Thornton, who was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game, fears that he suffered a significant left-Achilles injury. He'll undergo an MRI exam on Friday to confirm.

Trent Thornton Hits 15-Day Injured List

The Seattle Mariners have placed right-handed pitcher Trent Thornton (illness) on the 15-day injured list with appendicitis. In a corresponding move, the Mariners promoted right-handed pitcher Troy Taylor from Triple-A Tacoma. Through his first 15 1/3 innings of work this season, Thornton has held a 5.87 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP. Across this stint, Thornton has struck out 11 batters and served up four walks. He has allowed five long balls. Under the hood, Thornton generated a 6.71 xERA and a .313 xBA, which are both in the fifth percentile among qualified pitchers. Fantasy managers should expect Taylor to have a role as a low-leverage option in the bullpen. Through the opening month of the season, Taylor has tossed three innings of work in the majors but has allowed four runs.

Trent Thornton Records First Save Wednesday

Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton recorded his first save of the season (and of his career) in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Rays. He wasn't the first choice in the ninth, but Andres Munoz walked the first two batters he faced and then hit a batter, prompting a pitching change. It is a situation to monitor, as Munoz has also been used in the eighth inning if the situation calls for it, allowing others to record saves, namely Ryne Stanek. Thornton doesn't figure to get many more opportunities, but should the opportunity arise, the 30-year-old has been solid this season, posting a 3.22 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 20.3% K-BB%.

Mariners Acquire Trent Thornton From Blue Jays

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-handed reliever Trent Thornton from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy, according to sources. The move comes after the Blue Jays designated Thornton for assignment last week when Toronto acquired reliever Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander came up as a starting-pitching prospect for the Jays, but he's worked mostly in relief since 2021. He pitched in just 5 1/3 innings at the big-league level for Toronto this year and he has a 4.77 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 98 walks and 249 strikeouts in 260 1/3 major-league innings in the last five years over 108 appearances (35 starts). Thornton won't suddenly have any fantasy value with the move to the American League West.

Trent Thornton Recalled On Sunday

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trent Thornton was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. The 28-year-old righty will replace Tim Mayza (shoulder), who landed on the 15-day injured list with a dislocated shoulder, in the Jays bullpen. Thornton, who was just optioned to Triple-A back on July 30, owns a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 30:15 K/BB ratio over 38 innings with Toronto this year.

Trent Thornton Recalled On Saturday

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trent Thornton has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. The 28-year-old reliever, who's gone back and forth between the majors and the minors this year, will provide some bullpen depth for the Jays moving forward. He owns a 4.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 29:15 K/BB ratio over 37 innings (26 appearances) this season. Rookie Max Castillo was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Trent Thornton Optioned To Minors

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Trent Thornton has been optioned to the minors on Wednesday. The 27-year-old righty pitcher will head to Triple-A Buffalo after posting a 4.78 ERA over 37 2/3 innings with the Jays this season. The Jays recently acquired right-hander Trevor Richards, so Thornton was the odd man out. There's a good chance that Thornton will return again at some point, but won't be worth stashing.

Blue Jays Going With Trent Thornton As Opener On Monday

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that Trent Thornton is going to start Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He will serve as an opener. Ross Stripling, who was previously slated to start, will likely work in relief. Thornton has been solid over 14 appearances (two starts) this year, posting a 2.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Stripling, on the other hand, has had a disastrous season, going 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over six starts. There's a good chance that he's lost his spot in the rotation for now, though the Blue Jays haven't officially announced that to be the case.
