Trevor Bauer News
Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed pitcher Trevor Bauer posted two scoreless frames with two strikeouts in his first appearance with L.A. While there was considerable pomp around his free agency, fantasy managers shouldn't lose sight of the production that the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has compiled. Many have pointed to Bauer's 3.90 career ERA as reason for not viewing him in the elite tier, but it's hard to fathom how his early-career struggles could have any impact on his current role entering 2021. With the backing of a powerful Dodgers offense, in addition to being on the heels of amassing an eye-popping 276 ERA+ last season, Bauer should likely come off the board in the first 2-3 rounds of all season-long drafts provided that he stays healthy through Cactus League play.
The Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a three-year, $102 million deal with free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Bauer on Friday. Bauer has opt-outs after the first two years and will earn $40 million in 2021 and $45 million in 2022, which will make him the highest-paid player in MLB history each of the next two seasons. The reigning National League Cy Young winner will join forces with his hometown team, the defending World Series champions, and he'll join a rotation that includes Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler and David Price. The New York Mets were the other finalist for Bauer's services and were looking to pair him with ace Jacob deGrom, who won the Cy Young in 2018 and 2019. The 30-year-old right-hander had a league-leading 1.73 ERA and 0.79 WHIP while striking out 100 and walking 17 in 73 innings over 11 starts (two complete-game shutouts) with the Reds in 2020. He struggled to a 4.48 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 34 starts with Cleveland and Cincy in 2019, but he was an All-Star with the Tribe in 2018 when he went 12-6 with a 2.21 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Already a top-five fantasy ace, Bauer will be even more attractive with one of baseball's best lineups behind him in Los Angeles.
The New York Mets' offer to free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Bauer is for three years and is believed to be close to $100 million. There is also likely an opt-out clause in the deal after the first season. It was reported earlier on Thursday that Bauer and the Mets had agreed on a contract, but those reports were premature. The 2020 National League Cy Young winner is down to the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers, with a conclusion to the sweepstakes expected within the next 24 hours or so. New York could be the favorite at this point and would have a nasty one-two punch at the top of the rotation with Bauer and Jacob deGrom, but the Dodgers are Bauer's hometown team and are coming off a World Series championship. Wherever Bauer is pitching, he'll be a top-five fantasy ace worth taking as early as Round 2.
