Trevor May News
Former Oakland A's relief pitcher Trevor May announced his retirement on his own Twitch livestream on Monday. May was solid for the A's in 2023, recording 21 saves and a 3.28 ERA. The 2008 Phillies fourth-round pick started his major league career as a starter for the Minnesota Twins but settled into a bullpen role soon after. May's big league career was split between the Twins, Mets, and A's. He retires with a 4.24 ERA 33 saves, 66 holds, and a 26.8 K%. Best of luck to Trevor in his post-baseball streaming career!
Oakland Athletics closer Trevor May picked up his 21st save of the season in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. May didn't allow a baserunner and struck out one in his inning of work. The veteran reliever is on a very nice run since June, picking up all 21 of his saves while allowing only 11 runs (eight earned) in 34 IP (2.08 ERA). With May not under contract for 2024, his fantasy value remains up in the air. Should he return to Oakland, he would likely not have much competition for the closer role, meaning he would be draftable as a low-end reliever.
Oakland Athletics right-hander Trevor May was asked to pitch the ninth inning of the 5-2 win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. He allowed one hit, but that was all as he earned his 18th save of the season. May now owns a 3.89 ERA (5.27 FIP), 1.50 WHIP, 18.6% strikeout rate, and 15.8% walk rate through 42 games this season. The 33-year-old might lead the A's bullpen, but those are hard numbers to roster in standard 12-team formats, even with his occasional save. Fantasy managers can likely find better relief help on the waiver wire.

2022 was a season to forget for Trevor May. Attempting to add a splitter to his arsenal, the year started off rough as the 33 year old allowed eight runs in his first 8.1 innings before being shut down due to a stress reaction in his right humerus. He did not return until August, but certainly looked to be back to his usual self down the stretch. Across 16.2 innings upon coming off the IL, he repped a 3.24 ERA. 2.88 xFIP, and 35.7 K%. His strong return proved enough to earn himself a one year contract with the Oakland Athletics. The good news is there aren't many teams in the league where Trevor May would be the favorite for save opportunities, but Oakland is certainly one. The bad news is there's an almost a 100% chance that May is dealt at the deadline to a team on the other side of the spectrum. So if all goes well you are looking at a half season of saves which is still extremely reasonable at the current ~354 ADP. But the real baller move would be to follow Oakland's strategy and trade May to a saves-needy team in your league after a few months and stash whoever has established himself as the next in line up to that point. Zach Jackson, A.J. Puk, Dany Jimenez, and Domingo Acevedo are all names to keep on the watch list.
