Trevor Rosenthal News
The Detroit Tigers will take their time ramping up relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal in spring training to make sure that he stays healthy. Manager A.J. Hinch didn't put a timetable on Rosenthal's readiness for games and said "Opening Day is not something that's feasible." "It does not matter when he's ready, as long as he's healthy." Rosenthal isn't dealing with any injury currently, but he's had a long list of ailments in recent seasons. The 32-year-old just signed a minor-league deal with Detroit over the weekend. Thoracic outlet syndrome has kept him out of the big leagues since the shortened 2020 season, so it's anyone's guess as to how effective he'll be with the Tigers in 2023.
The Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms on a minor-league deal with right-hander Trevor Rosenthal. The 32-year-old will receive an invitation to Spring Training and a chance to earn a roster spot in Detroit. Rosenthal hasn't pitched since 2020, but he was solid during that season. He posted a 1.90 ERA with 38 strikeouts and only eight walks with 11 saves in 23 games between the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres. He could very well work his way into high-leverage situations quickly in Detroit. The Tigers don't exactly have much competition at closer. Rosenthal will be someone worth watching during Spring Training.
Free-agent relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal (lat) said he is healthy and is looking for an opportunity to pitch in 2023. Rosenthal last pitched in the big leagues in the shortened 2020 season with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres, posting a legitimate 1.90 ERA (2.22 FIP), a 0.84 WHIP, 11 saves and 38 strikeouts in 23 2/3 relief innings. He then signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Athletics for the 2021 season but never pitched after having thoracic outlet surgery on his shoulder and then surgery to fix a torn labrum in his hip that summer. Rosenthal signed with the San Francisco Giants late this season, but hamstring and lat injuries kept him from pitching with the team. It remains to be seen if a team will take a chance on the hard-throwing, injury-prone right-hander for the 2023 season.

Not only did right-handed relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal bounce back in 2020 as a top-tier reliever in just 23 innings with the Royals and Padres, but his fantasy stock is on the rise heading into the 2021 season after he signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Oakland Athletics to supplant Liam Hendriks in the closer role. The hard-throwing 30-year-old was great with the Cardinals from 2012-17, but he missed all of 2018 after having Tommy John surgery and could not find the strike zone in 2019, walking 30.9 percent of the batters he faced in the majors. Last year, he posted a 1.90 ERA and 4.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio while recovering his elite four-seam fastball -- only eight pitchers had a higher average than Rosenthal's 98 mph. There is obvious risk in putting too much stock into his small sample size of 2020, but if Rosenthal can transfer those gains into 2021, he could be a top-10 fantasy closer for Oakland.
