Ty Buttrey Fails To Report To Alternate Site

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey failed to report to the team's alternate site and has been placed on the restricted list, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Manager Joe Maddon said that Buttrey has opted to walk away from the game for now. Buttrey had been a high-strikeout, middle reliever for the Angels in 2018 and 2019, but had a down year in 2020 where he posted career-worsts with a 5.81 ERA and 16.1 percent strikeout rate. He had a slightly better, albeit lackluster performance in Spring Training with a 3.86 ERA and 19.4 percent strikeout rate in seven appearances, but it wasn't enough to secure a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.

Ty Buttrey Hopes To Produce Out Of Bullpen

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Ty Buttrey is hoping to become a cog in the team's bullpen for the 2021 season. Buttrey has enjoyed a solid spring thus far, posting a 3.86 ERA with seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched. It was a bumpy ride for the right-hander last season, posting 1.41 WHIP and a 5.81 ERA in 27 appearances last season. Buttrey will slide into a bullpen role to open the season.

Ty Buttrey, Felix Pena Will Share Angels Closer Duties

The Los Angeles Angels will utilize the duo of Ty Buttrey and Felix Pena to close out games moving forward, with neither arm officially being tabbed as the full-time closer. Pena picked up the save Thursday against San Diego, while Buttrey has recorded four of the six saves that the club has compiled this season. The split duties will make rostering either in season-long formats frustrating, but Pena appears to be the better option of the two at this stage, having racked up 23 strikeouts in 19 frames.

Ty Buttrey Gets Save Chance Sunday, Gives Up Lead

Los Angeles Angels right-handed pitcher Ty Buttrey was tabbed to close out Sundays contest against the Astros in favor of closer Hansel Robles, but he was unable to lock down the win. Its been a rough start to 2020 for Buttrey, who has now allowed runs in three of his first four outings. He combined to accrue six saves over the past two years and appears to be the next man in line should manager Joe Maddon turn elsewhere from Robles moving forward, but Sunday was not a step in the right direction. The nine earned runs that Robles has yielded thus far are an American League-worst, opening up save chances for other Angels, even as Maddon struggles to find a candidate that he can rely upon.

Ty Buttrey Throws Bullpen Tuesday

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey (intercostal) said he threw a 20-pitch bullpen session in Florida on Tuesday and has been training seven days a week during the coronavirus shutdown. Buttrey continues to practice social distancing and has no health concerns with him or his family. The right-handed reliever tweaked his intercostal muscle in spring training, but he should be just fine for whenever the 2020 season kicks off. Expect the 27-year-old to be the primary setup man to closer Hansel Robles again this season. Buttrey had a 3.98 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, two saves and 84 K's in 72 1/3 innings for the Halos last year and can be valuable to fantasy owners in leagues that reward holds.

Ty Buttrey Throws Successful Bullpen

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey (intercostal) said his bullpen session on Wednesday went "phenomenally." Buttrey will have time to build back up and be ready for Opening Day as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. The 26-year-old (27 later this month) should open the season as the primary eighth-inning setup man in front of closer Hansel Robles. Buttrey won't have much fantasy appeal, however, unless you're in a holds league or as a handcuff for Robles owners in deep AL-only formats.

Ty Buttrey To Throw Again Thursday

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey (side) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday and will throw another one on Saturday or Sunday and then again on Wednesday before getting into a spring training game in early March. Buttrey is dealing with an intercostal issue but has plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day, where he's expected to be the primary eighth-inning setup man before closer Hansel Robles. The 26-year-old (27 next month) had a 3.98 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings for the Halos in 2019. He won't have much fantasy appeal outside of leagues that count holds for setup men.

Ty Buttrey Expected To Be Ready For Opening Day

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey (oblique) played catch on Thursday and threw at around 60-70 percent intensity and "felt good, no pain, throwing." Buttrey had an MRI exam less than week ago on his oblique, but he's expected to be ready by Opening Day as the primary eighth-inning setup man for Hansel Robles. The 26-year-old (27 in March) had a 3.98 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 84 strikeouts and two saves in 72 1/3 innings pitched last season for the Angels. Unless Robles is injured or demoted from the closer role, Buttrey won't have much fantasy appeal in mixed leagues.

Ty Buttrey Tweaks Intercostal Muscle

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey (intercostal) tweaked an intercostal muscle and will be slowed down in camp for a couple of weeks. However, manager Joe Maddon still expects Buttrey to be ready for Opening Day. Relievers don't need as much time to get ramped up for the regular season, so Buttrey might not miss the start of the season. If healthy, the 26-year-old (27 in March) should serve as the primary setup man to Hansel Robles in Anaheim. Buttrey had a 3.98 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, two saves and 84 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings last year. He'll really only be fantasy relevant if Robles misses time with injury or is demoted from the closer role.

Ty Buttrey Secures Two-Inning Save In Home Win

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Ty Buttrey allowed just two hits with two strikeouts over two scoreless innings in Wednesday's 6-3 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays as he secured his first save of the season while lowering his ERA to 1.13. He threw just 11 pitches in the eighth inning, so manager Brad Ausmus stuck with him in the ninth. Both Buttrey and Hansel Robles pitched on Tuesday and would've been unavailable Thursday if they would've each pitched on back-to-back days. The Angels removed Cody Allen from the closer's role and the back end has been a mixture of pitchers getting looks in the rare occasion a save chance has come up for the 14-17 club. Buttrey and Robles are the best bets for ninth-inning duties at the moment, with Luis Garcia also in the mix.
