Tyler Chatwood News
The Toronto Blue Jays reached an agreement with right-hander Tyler Chatwood on a one-year, $3 million contract on Monday, according to a source. Chatwood will have the opportunity to earn another $2.5 million in incentives, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. The 31-year-old is entering his 10th big league season and has played with the Angels, Rockies and Cubs. Spending the last three years with Chicago, Chatwood has a 4.70 ERA over 67 outings (30 starts) with the Cubbies. He finished with a 5.30 ERA and a career-high 12.1 K/9 over 18 2/3 innings (five starts) in the shortened 2020 season. Toronto is expected to use him out of the bullpen, which will kill most of his fantasy appeal. Chatwood has elite spin rates on his fastball and curveball, but he's averaged 4.7 walks per nine innings in his career, making him an inconsistent streamer when he's in the rotation.
Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood appeared on track to be a breakout star in 2020 following his first two starts of the year. Alas, he has made just five starts this season to the tune of a 5.30 ERA and is likely done for the remainder of the campaign after a downturn in health as he attempted to return from a strained right forearm. The club appears to have found his replacement in the rotation in the form of righty Alec Mills, who tossed a no-hitter in his most recent outing. Chatwood is set to become a free agent at seasons end, having potentially made his last appearance in a Cubs uniform, barring a drastic upswing in health over the next six weeks.
Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood will incur a stint on the 10-day injured list after having left his start Sunday against Cincinnati due to a right elbow ailment. The club is optimistic that Chatwood will return at some point in 2020, although he will miss at least a few starts. Jose Quintana is the likeliest candidate to take over in the starting rotation, although Colin Rea could stake a claim as well. Chatwood, who owns a 5.30 ERA this season, can be left on the wire until a timeline is established for his return to the mound.
