Walker Buehler Officially Makes the Padres' Opening Day Roster

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Walker Buehler has officially made the Opening Day roster, manager Craig Stammen confirmed to radio host Sammy Levitt. This doesn't come as much of a surprise, as Buehler had put together an impressive spring training. Through three starts (11.2 innings) in the Cactus League, he maintained a 2.98 FIP with 10.03 K/9, 3.09 BB/9, and a 42.9% ground ball rate. Presumably, he'll end up in the No. 5 starter role, putting him in line to make his Padres regular-season debut on Tuesday, March 31, against the San Francisco Giants. Buehler was roughed up to the tune of a 5.45 ERA across 23 outings in Boston last year, but he latched on with the Phillies near the end of the season and enjoyed much better results. Across 13.2 innings with Philadelphia, he posted a 0.66 ERA with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Walker Buehler Looks Likely to Make Padres Opening Day Rotation

MLB.com's Manny Randhawa writes that at this point, "it stands to reason" that right-hander Walker Buehler "will be part" of the San Diego Padres' Opening Day starting rotation now that right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) will start the year on the injured list. As camp progressed, Buehler and German Marquez emerged as the favorites for the final rotation spot. Buehler entered his start against the Giants on Monday with a 5.40 ERA over two spring outings, and Marquez was hit hard his last time out against the Royals to push his spring ERA to 12.15. Buehler tossed five scoreless innings against the Giants on Monday with seven strikeouts to drop his Cactus League ERA to 3.09. The 31-year-old is no longer the same pitcher who throws in the high-90s after missing all of the 2023 season due to arm issues. He had an ERA over 5.00 in his final season in L.A. in 2024 and had a 5.38 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 126 innings with Boston and Philadelphia last year. The fantasy upside is now limited with a lowered strikeout rate, but Buehler could bounce back in San Diego in a pitcher-friendly home environment. Buehler's fantasy stock in NL-only leagues is on the rise.

Padres Sign Walker Buehler to Minor-League Deal

The San Diego Padres signed free-agent right-hander Walker Buehler to a minor-league deal on Monday, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. The Padres' first four starting rotation spots for 2026 appear to be set with Nick Pivetta, Michael King, Joe Musgrove, and Randy Vasquez. Buehler will come to spring training competing for the fifth and final rotation spot with German Marquez, Matt Waldron, Triston McKenzie, JP Sears, and Marco Gonzales. The 31-year-old struggled in his final season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024 and also didn't look great in 126 innings with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies last year, posting a 4.93 ERA (5.66 FIP) and 1.52 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 61 walks in 26 outings (24 starts). Buehler has not been the same pitcher since having Tommy John surgery in 2022, and he'll need to limit the walks and keep the ball in the yard to win a rotation spot in San Diego.

Taijuan Walker to Start, Walker Buehler to Follow on Friday

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker will start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, while fellow righty Walker Buehler will follow in relief. The Phillies are going with a Walker-Buehler piggyback arrangement to line up left-hander Cristopher Sanchez for Tuesday and Sunday starts next week, which will put him on schedule to toe the rubber in their first playoff game. Walker has made 31 appearances (20 starts) this season and gone 5-8 with a 4.17 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, and 79:37 K:BB in 116 2/3 innings. Buehler struggled so badly with the Boston Red Sox that they released him in late August, but the Phillies scooped him up shortly after that. He started and won in his Phillies debut on Sept. 12, tossing five innings of one-run, five-hit ball with 3:1 K:BB against the Kansas City Royals.

Walker Buehler to Join Phillies Rotation on Sept. 12

After signing a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, right-hander Walker Buehler will have to wait a little while to debut with the club. Philadelphia plans to have Buehler make one start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before it brings him up to take the ball against the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 12, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. The Phillies will experiment with a six-man rotation down the stretch, so Buehler's not going to push anyone out of their starting staff. The club's hoping to catch late-season lightning in a bottle with Buehler, who has struggled this year despite possessing a quality track record. After a fruitful run with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2017-24, he joined the Boston Red Sox on a one-year, $21.05 million guarantee last winter. The 31-year-old fell flat in Boston, though, as he pitched to a 5.45 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 in 112 1/3 innings before the team released him Friday.

Walker Buehler Signs With Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-hander Walker Buehler on Sunday. Well, it didn't take Buehler long to find a new home after being released by the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Buehler has struggled this season with a 5.45 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and a 84/55 K/BB ratio across 23 games (22 starts) with the Red Sox. This seems like a low-risk move for the Phillies to get another arm for the postseason. The 31-year-old had solid postseason success during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies rotation is currently full, so Buehler figures to operate out of the bullpen. A good depth move for the Phillies, but the change of scenery probably won't help Buehler's fantasy value.

Red Sox Release Walker Buehler

The Boston Red Sox released right-hander Walker Buehler on Friday, sources tell Chris Cotillo of Mass Live. Buehler began the 2025 campaign with the Red Sox in their starting rotation, but the 31-year-old veteran was recently moved to the bullpen due to inconsistent results on the bump. He now finds himself on the open market heading into the final month of the regular season. Boston will eat what is left of Buehler's $18.05 million for this season and pay a $3 million buyout on his 2026 option. In 23 appearances (22 starts) in his only year in Beantown, Buehler went 7-7 with a 5.45 ERA (5.88 FIP) and 1.56 WHIP with 84 strikeouts and 55 walks in 112 1/3 innings pitched. The two-time All-Star was one of the best pitchers in baseball with the Dodgers through 2021, but he just hasn't been the same since his second Tommy John procedure in 2023.

Walker Buehler Officially Moving to Bullpen

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler is officially shifting to the bullpen, according to manager Alex Cora. There has been speculation about this with how poorly Buehler has been pitching this season. He currently holds a 5.40 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and a 82/54 K/BB ratio across 22 starts this season. The Red Sox could use the help in the bullpen with multiple relievers currently sidelined with injuries. The move to the bullpen will eliminate any fantasy value that Buehler still had left. The Red Sox haven't named a starting pitcher for Monday's game, but Richard Fitts and Kyle Harrison seem like the favorites.

Walker Buehler Could Lose Rotation Spot, Move to Bullpen

Boston Red Sox right-hander Walker Buehler is in danger of losing his spot in the team's starting rotation and shifting to the bullpen, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. While Buehler is tentatively scheduled to make his next start on Monday in Baltimore, the Red Sox could instead use him in relief in this weekend's series against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox signed Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million guarantee in free agency last offseason, but the former Los Angeles Dodger hasn't delivered as hoped. Buehler, 31, has recorded just seven quality starts in 22 tries and gone 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.86 WHIP, and 82:54 K:BB in 110 innings. Richard Fitts and minor leaguers Payton Tolle and Connelly Early are among the candidates to take Buehler's starting job, Cotillo reports.

Walker Buehler Tosses Six Scoreless Innings on Friday

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler did not allow any runs over six innings of work on Friday, yielding four hits and two walks while striking out four batters on the way to earning his seventh win of the year. It was his third quality start in his last five starts, pitching to a 3.21 ERA over that stretch, but it has come with a 1.50 WHIP and a 0.0 percent K-BB%. The 31-year-old has been roughed up to the tune of a 5.40 ERA and 1.56 WHIP with just 75 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched (6.75 K/9) this season. The righty will take on the Astros on the road in his next start on Wednesday, a team he faced recently and allowed three earned runs on nine hits and three walks while not striking out a batter, so he can probably be avoided in DFS.
