The Miami Marlins signed free-agent infielder/outfielder Yangervis Solarte to a minor league deal on Friday night, according to a source. Solarte is expected to appear in extended spring training and will be assigned to Triple-A New Orleans after that. The 31-year-old hit just .205/.247/.315 with six extra-base hits and seven RBI in 78 plate appearances for the Giants this year before he was cut. The struggling Marlins could probably use a veteran player like Solarte who can fill in at multiple positions across the diamond, so we wouldn't be surprised to see him in Miami relatively soon. However, he won't come with much fantasy appeal and would probably only be useful in NL-only leagues.
The San Francisco Giants designated infielder/outfielder Yangervis Solarte for assignment on Tuesday. Second baseman Donovan Solano was among the players that were called up from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. The switch-hitting Solarte was playing sporadically with the Giants and hit just .205/.247/.315 with a homer and seven RBI in 73 at-bats. He could latch on with or be traded to another team, but he's unlikely to be fantasy relevant. Solano hasn't had much success in the big leagues in the past and will probably just be a bench player in San Fran, limiting his fantasy appeal significantly.
San Francisco Giants infielder Yangervis Solarte ended up 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI in Saturday's 3-2 road win against the San Diego Padres, his former team. He is a decent fantasy option due to his positional versatility from an eligibility perspective, as well as his occasional pop. Solarte has hit 10 or more homers in each of the past five seasons. However, be careful, as he can hurt fantasy owners in the batting average department. He hit just .226 last season in Toronto.
Michael Reed Leading Off, Yangervis Solarte Hitting Third
San Francisco Giants outfielder Michael Reed is starting in right field and batting leadoff against Padres starter Joey Lucchesi on Friday night. Steven Duggar will be bumped down to seventh in the order against the left-hander. Infielder Yangervis Solarte also gets the start at second base over Joe Panik, and he's hitting third. First baseman Brandon Belt will take the night off as well against the southpaw. Both Reed and Solarte see a boost hitting at the top of the Giants order, but they'll be facing San Diego's best pitcher from 2018 in one of the toughest environments to hit in baseball.
San Francisco Giants infielder Yangervis Solarte will play all over the infield and potentially in the outfield, and he could potentially take at-bats away from second baseman Joe Panik against left-handed starting pitchers. He could be in line for an even larger role if the team deals Panik, a move which has been discussed in the offseason. Third baseman Evan Longoria could also potentially be moved, opening up a regular role for Solarte. Either way, Solarte's positional flexibility will mean he finds his way into the lineup somewhere. He is worth a look in NL-only fantasy play as a late-round pick with some upside.
The San Francisco Giants agreed to a minor league deal with free-agent infielder Yangervis Solarte on Friday. The deal includes an invite to spring training, and his deal will be worth $1.75 million with an additional $250,000 in incentives if he makes the big league roster. The 31-year-old can play all four infield spots, but most of his experience has come at the hot corner. Solarte is also willing to play some left field. The switch hitter battled a hamstring injury in 2018 and hit .266 with a .655 OPS and 17 homers in his only season in Toronto. He has double-digit homers in each of his five seasons and also makes plenty of contact. Solarte isn't a bad utility guy to have, but his fantasy upside is limited and he should only be owned in NL-only leagues.
The Toronto Blue Jays declined infielder Yangervis Solarte's $5.5 million option for the 2019 season, but he will remain on the 2019 roster and is eligible for salary arbitration. Solarte hit a disappointing .226/.277/.378 with 17 home runs and 54 RBI in 122 games in 2018. The switch-hitter certainly has pop in his lumber, but he's most valuable to a club because of his position versatility on the infield. He should once again move around the infield next year, but with his playing time unpredictable, he'll really only be an depth option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.
The Toronto Blue Jays are still working through infielder Yangervis Solarte's 2019 option decision, according to general manager Ross Atkins. Solarte started strong in 2018 but faded and was bothered by injuries in the second half. He finished with a disappointing .226/.277/.378 slash line to go along with 17 home runs and 54 RBI in 122 games. Solarte's power, switch-hitting ability and positional flexibility is nice, but the Blue Jays are going younger and they may choose to let Solarte walk. He's more of a single-universe commodity for fantasy owners wherever he winds up in 2019.
The Toronto Blue Jays activated infielder Yangervis Solarte (oblique) from the 10-day disabled list on Sunday, and he will play second base and hit seventh against Indians starter Mike Clevinger. Solarte may not be a great play initially in a tough matchup against Clevinger, but he'll return to being valuable in deep mixed and AL-only leagues to close out the year. The 31-year-old is hitting .233/.287/.397 with 17 homers and 53 RBI in 2018.
Toronto Blue Jays infielder Yangervis Solarte (oblique) could return from the disabled list on Sunday or Tuesday, according to manager John Gibbons. Solarte has been out since Aug. 11, so he could be eased back into action in the final weeks. He was hitting just .233/.287/.397 but did have 17 home runs and 53 RBI in 433 at-bats before his injury. Solarte's multi-position eligibility might be his greatest asset for fantasy owners.
