Yonder Alonso News

Yonder Alonso Joining Padres Taxi Squad

The San Diego Padres acquired first baseman Yonder Alonso on Tuesday from the Atlanta Braves for cash. The 33-year-old veteran will rejoin the Friars, who he played with from 2012-2015, and report to the taxi squad. The brother-in-law of Padres third baseman Manny Machado, Alonso will mentor young bats at the alternate site and provide heightened competition for developing arms. Alonso holds a career 102 wRC+ in 10 seasons and had his best campaign in 2017 cracking 28 homers with an .866 OPS. Without a slew of injuries, Alonso doesnt have a path to the Padres roster and can be ignored in fantasy.

Braves Purchase Contracts Of Josh Tomlin, Yonder Alonso

The Atlanta Braves purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Josh Tomlin and first baseman Yonder Alonso to the major league roster on Saturday. Tomlin, 35, could be an option to begin the year as an opener or as a piggyback option in Atlanta's rotation with Cole Hamels unlikely to be ready. That likely won't translate to much fantasy value at all, however, unless Tomlin vultures some wins. The veteran swingman had a 3.74 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and just a 5.8 K/9 in 79 1/3 innings for the Braves last year. Alonso was a bust last year for the White Sox and ended up hitting just .199 with a .642 OPS with Chicago and Colorado. He brings depth at first base behind Freddie Freeman and at the designated hitter spot, but he's one to avoid in mixed leagues.

Yonder Alonso Signs With Braves

The Atlanta Braves signed first baseman Yonder Alonso to a minor league deal on Tuesday, according to a source. Alonso hit an atrocious .199/.296/.346 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 121 games between the White Sox and Rockies last season. After clubbing a career-high 28 homers with the A's and Mariners as an All-Star in 2017, Alonso hit 23 dingers and drove in 83 with the Indians in 2018, but he fell off drastically a season ago. In Atlanta he'll strictly be a bench bat if he makes the team out of spring training and will likely only see significant at-bats if All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman misses time with an injury.

Yonder Alonso Homers In Second Straight

Colorado Rockies first baseman Yonder Alonso hit a rocket out to right-center in the top of the sixth inning against the Padres on Sunday. Though it was his first start of the weekend, Alonso actually homered as a pinch-hitter in Saturday's game as well. Along with the homer, Alonso walked three times in his five plate appearances on Sunday. Since moving to Colorado Alonso has been used sparingly in the field, instead mostly operating as the team's first pinch-hitter off the bench. He's done very well so far, hitting .345 with three home runs and three doubles in just 36 plate appearances. Unfortunately, with the log jam that is Colorado's infield, it's unlikely Alonso will hit his way into a starting job.

Yonder Alonso to Make First Rockies Start

Colorado Rockies first baseman Yonder Alonso will make his first start for the club, in place of a resting Daniel Murphy, for the opening game of a doubleheader at the Washington Nationals. Alonso doubled as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday to begin his Rockies tenure, but he only hit .178/.275/.301 for the White Sox this season. With Colorado playing on the road, there will be better options for DFS, nor is Alonso relevant in standard fantasy leagues.

Yonder Alonso Joins Rockies

Colorado Rockies first baseman Yonder Alonso had his contract purchased from Triple-A on Tuesday. Alonso hit .178/.275/.301 with the White Sox before being designated for assignment by the team recently. The Rockies have recalled Alonso after he was crushing the ball in the minors. He'll basically be a bench bat for the team, so he won't have much fantasy value at all.

Yonder Alonso Released by White Sox

Chicago White Sox first baseman Yonder Alonso has been released by the organization on Wednesday. The 30-year-old slugger hit .178/.275/.301 with seven home runs and 27 RBI during his time on the South Side. He was designated for assignment earlier in the week, but was not claimed by any team. There's a chance he lands elsewhere, but he can be left on the waiver wire right now.

Yonder Alonso Designated For Assignment

Chicago White Sox first baseman Yonder Alonso was designated for assignment on Thursday. He's likely played his last game with the White Sox and will become a free agent unless he is claimed off waivers. Alonso had been having a dreadful first year with the White Sox, slashing .178/.275/.301 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 67 games. He should be far removed from your fantasy radar.

Yonder Alonso is Absent on Saturday

Chicago White Sox first baseman Yonder Alonso (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Alonso will get a routine day off here, but he's been awful at the plate, so he should be avoided in most formats. Jose Rondon will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth versus righty Brad Keller. Rondon doesn't have enough upside to warrant ownership in fantasy leagues or DFS contests.

Yonder Alonso Drops in Lineup

Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yonder Alonso has been dropped into seventh in the batting order on Thursday. The slugging lefty has been towards the top of the lineup throughout most of the season. However, Alonso is hitting just .178, so the White Sox feel he would do better lower in the order. Alonso is worth looking at in AL-only leagues, but that's about it right now.
