Yu Chang To Miss 6-8 Weeks

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yu Chang (oblique) is set to miss the next six to eight weeks as the injury is more severe than originally thought, according to skipper Kevin Cash. Chang's spring was off to a nice start as he homered on Sunday versus the Detroit Tigers but his chances at Opening Day are now zero. The 28-year-old spent the 2023 season with the Boston Red Sox but struggled mightily at the plate, hitting just .162 with six home runs, four stolen bases, and a .532 OPS across 112 plate appearances, production that graded out 61% below the league average, as per his 39 wRC+. A veteran of 235 MLB contests in parts of four seasons, Chang is a career .204 hitter with 20 home runs, five steals, and a .624 OPS across 650 trips to the plate.

Yu Chang To Miss A Couple Of Weeks

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yu Chang (oblique) is dealing with a left-oblique injury in camp and is expected to miss a couple of weeks. The 28-year-old Taiwanese infielder suffered the injury during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game versus the Toronto Blue Jays and is now likely to open the 2024 regular season on the injured list. When he's healthy enough to return, Chang will now likely make his season debut in the minors with Triple-A Durham. He's expected to fill a reserve role for the Rays this year if he's in the big leagues. Chang went 17-for-105 (.162) with six home runs, 18 RBI and four stolen bases in 39 games for the Boston Red Sox in 2023 and has a weak .204/.265/.359 career slash line with 20 homers and 79 RBI in 235 games in his five major-league seasons.

Yu Chang Has Elected Free Agency

Former Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang has elected free agency. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment back on August 8 and then outrighted to Triple-A Worcester on August 11. Chang dealt with a ton of injuries this season with the Red Sox, putting up a lackluster .162/.200/.352 batting line with six home runs, 18 RBI, four stolen bases, and 12 runs scored over just 105 at-bats (39 games). He will try and get a spring training invite with another club this offseason.

Yu Chang On The Bench Saturday

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang will start Saturday's contest against the Chicago Cubs on the bench. Chang opened the second half of the season on Friday at shortstop, but he'll head to the bench for this one. Enrique Hernandez will handle the 6 on Saturday and will hit in the nine-hole against Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman. The 27-year-old Chang recently returned from hamate surgery on his hand just before the All-Star break, and he'll likely continue to work as infield depth for the Red Sox. He could lose out on even more playing time once Trevor Story (elbow) makes his 2023 debut. In just 21 games so far in 2023, Chang is hitting a lowly .145 (8-for-55) with four home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored.

Yu Chang Taking Saturday Off

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang (wrist, hand) won't play on Saturday. Skipper Alex Cora stated the 27-year-old would suit up for two of the three games versus the A's, so it appears he's in line to return for the series finale on Sunday. Chang recently returned from a lengthy stint on the injured list because of surgery on his hamate bone, so it's certainly understandable for the team to bring him back slowly. But in the meantime, Enrique Hernandez, who is 1-for-1 with a double lifetime against Oakland pitcher Austin Pruitt, will handle things at short while Christian Arroyo will take over at the keystone.

Yu Chang Likely To Be Activated This Weekend

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that infielder Yu Chang (wrist) is likely to be activated from the 60-day injured list this weekend. Chang is attempting to return from surgery on the hamate bone in his hand/wrist, and he's gone 3-for-16 with two runs scored in four games since restarting a minor-league rehab assignment. The 27-year-old is going to be Boston's regular shortstop when he returns, but only until Trevor Story (elbow) is ready to make his 2023 debut. Chang played in only 17 games earlier this year before getting hurt, and he hit .136 (6-for-44) with three home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored in 47 plate appearances.

Yu Chang Nearing A Return

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang (wrist) could be activated from the injured list in the coming days, according to MLB.com. The 27-year-old has played just 17 games this season before hitting the IL in late April with a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. Chang hit just .136 before the ailment and owns a career .206 average and .629 OPS with two steals across five seasons. However, manager Alex Cora assured reporters that the native of Taiwan will be the clubs starting shortstop upon his return. That will displace David Hamilton, who's had the majority of reps at short recently, but he's slashing just .120/.241/.160 across 11 contests.

Yu Chang Expected Back From Injured List Monday

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang (wrist) is anticipated to be activated from the 10-day injured list on Monday. The 27-year-old has been out since the end of April with a left wrist injury and had suffered a setback during rehab. That said, Chang has hit only .136 with eight RBI and three homers in 2023, so there aren't many fantasy managers anxiously awaiting his return.

Yu Chang Pauses Rehab Assignment

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang (wrist) felt pain in his hand during a AA game on Friday evening. The 27-year-old has since returned to Boston, where he will undergo further treatment. However, he plans to resume his rehab assignment next week. While the setback isn't anything serious, it won't matter much, considering Chang isn't on many fantasy rosters after beginning the season with a miserable .136 average.

Yu Chang Hits Off A Tee On Saturday

Boston Red Sox infielder Yu Chang (wrist) hit off a tee on Saturday. The 27-year-old is progressing after undergoing surgery a few weeks ago to remove the hamate bone from his left wrist. While he still has a way to go, he's at least moving in the right direction toward a return. Chang struggled before going down with the injury, hitting .136 (6-for-44) with three home runs, eight RBI, and one stolen base. In the meantime, Enrique Hernandez should continue handling things at short.
