Yunel Escobar News

Yunel Escobar May Be An Option For The Yankees

Free-agent infielder Yunel Escobar could be a good option for the New York Yankees, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. According to Heyman, New York wants to keep third base open for 2019 (at the latest) for Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, so they are looking at one-year deals for a third baseman. He says that Pirates infielder Josh Harrison is a decent fit, but he makes $12 million, so Escobar may be a better choice. Miguel Andujar could break camp as the third baseman for the Yankees if they do not add a player, something that general manager Brian Cashman said on Thursday that he is OK with.

Yunel Escobar Headed to Instructional League

Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) is headed out to the Instructional League next week to get some work in. It is unclear if/when he is expected to return to the Angels this season. With Luis Valbuena playing third and C.J. Cron playing first, Escobar may not have a spot in the starting lineup even if he does return. The 34-year-old has hit .274 with seven home runs and 31 RBI on the season.

Yunel Escobar's Return Still Up in the Air

Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) has been working out on the field in addition to hitting in the cages, reports manager Mike Scioscia. However, there is still not a definitive timetable for his return. With C.J. Cron playing first base and Luis Valbuena settling in at third base, the Angels are likely not in any rush to get Escobar back. Even when he does return, likely in a week or so, he may come back in a bench role. He does not hold fantasy value outside of extremely deep leagues for the rest of the 2017 season.

Yunel Escobar Could Face Live Pitching Next Week

Angels infielder Yunel Escobar (oblique) is still not ready for baseball activities. He could face live pitching in the instructional league next week however, making a return this season seem plausible. Escobar has been out since August 8 and was expected to return much sooner but suffered a setback. He is hitting .274 on the year but likely does not have a starting role if/when he returns thanks to the strong play of CJ Cron, allowing Luis Valbuena to play third. All this makes Escobar best left on the waiver wire for this season.

Yunel Escobar Expected To Swing Monday

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) is expected to resume swinging a bat Monday, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Escobar was getting close to rejoining the Angels until he suffered a setback on his rehab assignment late last week. He'll now need more time, and it's unknown when he might be activated from the disabled list. Escobar is mainly just an asset in average (.274), as he had only seven homers and 31 RBI before his injury. He could also wind up splitting playing time at third with Luis Valbuena when he's back.

Yunel Escobar Suffers Setback On Rehab Assignment

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) felt stiffness in his side after a swing in his rehab game Wednesday, and he'll be re-evaluated before restarting his rehab assignment. It's a real disappointment, as Escobar was on track to be activated from the disabled list when rosters expanded Friday. Now it appears he'll need at least several more rehab games to prove he's 100 percent healthy, and he may not be able to return until sometime next week. The 34-year-old has hit .274 with only seven home runs and 31 RBI this season and could share time at the hot corner with Luis Valbuena when he's back, making him only attractive in AL-only affairs.

Yunel Escobar Hitless In First Rehab Game

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first rehab game with Single-A Inland Empire on Tuesday, and he played five innings at third base. Escobar is expected to play in one more rehab game Wednesday before coming off the disabled list when rosters expand Friday, Sept. 1. The Cuban infielder was hitting .274 with just seven home runs and 31 RBI in 350 at-bats before his injury, and his return could cut into the playing time of the hot-hitting Luis Valbuena at third base. Escobar is merely corner infield depth in AL-only leagues for his batting average.

Yunel Escobar Set to Rehab This Week

Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) is scheduled to play in rehab games for High-A Inland Empire on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Escobar is expected to return near the end of the week, although with a slew of right-handers set to face the Angels, there is not an immediate rush to get him back. With Luis Valbuena taking over at third base and hitting well, and C.J. Cron playing first base, there is a chance Escobar will return in a more limited capacity. Escobar is hitting .274 on the year with 43 runs scored.

Yunel Escobar Nearing a Return

Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) is scheduled to work out on the field on Friday. From there, the Angels will determine if he is ready to head out on a rehab assignment. If all goes well, Escobar will likely return early next week. The 34-year-old has hit .274 on the season with 43 runs scored. He is worth a roster spot in AL-only leagues if he returns to his leadoff role in Los Angeles, but he does not provide enough counting stats to be worthy of a roster spot in most formats.

Yunel Escobar Taking Ground Balls

Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) worked out on Monday and is planning to take ground balls Tuesday, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Escobar could return as soon as next Tuesday, although he does not have any minor league rehab appearances scheduled. Escobar, 34, is hitting .274 on the year with 43 runs scored and is an option in deep leagues and AL-only formats. His empty batting average holds little value otherwise, however.
