Yunior Severino Activated from Injured List, Rejoins Triple-A St. Paul

Minnesota Twins infield/outfield prospect Yunior Severino (oblique) was activated off the injured list on Sunday and started at third base for Triple-A St. Paul, going 1-for-4 in the contest with a double. It was the second IL stint of the season for the 25-year-old, missing a month with a hamstring strain and two weeks with an oblique strain. In the 21 games he's played, the switch-hitter is hitting a paltry .221 but has a respectable .338 OBP thanks to a strong 15.0 percent walk rate. However, after hitting 35 home runs in 2023 and another 21 in 2024, the Dominican has yet to hit one in 68 at-bats this year. Combined with a 35.0 percent strikeout rate thus far and falling outside the team's top 30 prospects, things are trending in the wrong direction for the 6-foot slugger. If he can display some of the power that made him a former highly regarded prospect, there's a chance he could see the big leagues later this year, but he'll also need to cut down on the strikeouts.

Yunior Severino Slugs Six Homers In Huge Week

Minnesota Twins minor league third baseman Yunior Severino is a 23-year-old prospect from the Dominican Republic. The switch-hitter has shown tremendous power from both sides of the plate, swatting 24 homers and averaging an extra-base hit in every other game this season. With that said, Severino's plate discipline has declined over the years, reaching a woeful rate of 3.34 strikeouts for every walk in 2023. Furthermore, Severino, who was initially signed as a middle infielder, has primarily played third base for the Wind Surge, indicative of subpar range and a slight decrease in defensive flair over the years. We must look beyond some of the aforementioned negatives and focus on the big week that Severino just delivered. All in all, the third baseman went 8-for-23 with a whopping six home runs through six games. He also drove in 10 runs while logging four walks and seven strikeouts. There's no denying the power is there, even if the plate discipline and defensive makeup represent a bit of a concern.

Yunior Severino Launching Homers In Minors

Minnesota Twins infield prospect Yunior Severino, who signed with the Braves as an international free agent back in 2017, has endured a long and tedious minor-league grind. He has worked his way through the minors, and now at the age of 23, he is making a case for a promotion to Triple-A. Severino has shown terrific power at the plate, but he also takes enormous hacks that can lead to far too many strikeouts. His strikeout rate is consistently in the 30s, and his walk rate almost always hovers around 10 percent. A three-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio is far from ideal, even for someone who hits a lot of home runs. Defensively, he has shown impressive glovework and instincts, locking him into second or third base long-term. Severino is coming off a big week in which he went 11-for-22 with four homers, eight RBI, four walks, and seven strikeouts. It would not be surprising at all to see the Twins promote him to Rochester very soon.
