The Kansas City Royals have signed starting pitcher Zach Davies to a minor-league contract on Monday. The former Arizona Diamondback had a 2023 season he would like to forget, pitching to an even 7.00 ERA in only 82 1/3 innings, striking out only 72 batters, and giving up 39 walks. This move by the Royals is clearly a depth move, as the rotation is solid with Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, Brady Singer, Michael Wacha, and Alec Marsh leading the way. Look for Davies to begin ramping up in the minors and be a potential replacement in the rotation if any of those five guys struggles or gets injured.
The Washington Nationals signed free-agent right-hander Zach Davies to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training on Saturday. The 31-year-old veteran has been in the big leagues for nine years and has a career 4.36 ERA. He spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 4-10 with a 5.19 ERA (4.74 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP with 91 walks and 174 strikeouts in 216 2/3 innings over 45 starts. Davies fell apart last year, posting a bloated 7.00 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with 39 walks and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings over 18 starts for the Snakes. He'll be attempting to win a roster spot with the Nats in camp this year, but even if he joins the team's starting rotation at some point, Davies should be ignored in mixed fantasy leagues.
The Arizona Diamondbacks designated right-hander Zach Davies for assignment on Wednesday and recalled pitcher Justin Martinez from the minors in a corresponding move. Apparently the D-backs had seen enough with Davies after he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in just three innings in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox in his start on Tuesday. The 30-year-old just wasn't good at all in Arizona this year, going 2-5 with a 7.00 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings in his 18 starts, and Arizona will look to upgrade their starting rotation if they make the postseason. Ryne Nelson is the best bet to take Davies' spot in the rotation if the club secures a wild-card spot.
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that right-hander Zach Davies (back) is ready to return from the 15-day injured list, but whether he returns to start on Sunday against the San Diego Padres on the road could depend on what the weather looks like that day. There is expected to be heavy rain in San Diego on Sunday with Hurricane Hilary gaining strength off the coast of Mexico. If Sunday's game gets rained out, Davies could make another minor-league rehab start. The 30-year-old wasn't sharp in his latest rehab start at Triple-A Reno, allowing seven runs in three innings. Davies will be returning to a rough 7.38 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings (12 starts). If he does make Sunday's start against the Friars, avoid him in fantasy.
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Zach Davies (back) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with lower-back inflammation and recalled left-hander Joe Mantiply from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. The back injury probably had something to do with Davies allowing nine earned runs while walking three in just 3 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. The poor performance dropped the 30-year-old to 1-5 on the season with a rough 7.38 ERA (4.69 FIP), 1.62 WHIP, 27 walks and only 46 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings over 12 starts in his second season in the desert. The soft-tossing Davies just doesn't have enough strikeout upside to be valuable in many mixed fantasy leagues. It's unclear who will take his spot in Arizona's rotation.
Zach Davies Will Be Activated And Start On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zach Davies (oblique) will be activated from the IL on Saturday and will start against the Boston Red Sox. The 30-year-old right-hander has been out since April 9 with a left oblique strain. It's to be determined which current D-Backs starter will be demoted from the starting rotation but we should find out shortly. Davies logged two starts prior to his injury and put together an ugly 5.79 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and 7:6 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings. He can be left on the waiver wire for now.
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zach Davies (oblique) is scheduled to pitch in another extended spring training game Sunday or Monday. He has been sidelined since early April with an oblique strain. Davis will throw 55 pitches, and the Diamondbacks will have him throw a couple more sessions before activating from the injured list. The 30-year-old owns a 5.79 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and a 7:6 K: BB across 9 1/3 innings in 2023. Davies is expected to rejoin Arizona's rotation later this month but is mainly an option in deep-league formats.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zach Davies (oblique) exited Saturday's game against the Dodgers. The 30-year-old logged 4 1/3 innings, surrendering five runs while walking four before getting pulled because of an oblique strain. Davies is likely heading for the injured list, with skipper Torey Lovullo stating the righty will miss "weeks." Lovullo also indicated there are "a lot of options on the table" regarding his replacement, including Drey Jameson, who is currently sitting on a 2-0 record and a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.
The Arizona Diamondbacks re-signed right-hander Zach Davies to a one-year deal worth $5 million on Wednesday. The deal also includes $3 million in incentives. Davies became a free agent this offseason after declining his $1.5 million mutual option for the 2023 season. The 29-year-old makes sense for an up-and-coming Arizona team at the back end of their rotation as an innings-eater. Davies went 2-5 for the Snakes last season with a 4.09 ERA (4.83 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 17.9 percent strikeout rate and 9.1 percent walk rate in 134 1/3 innings over 27 starts in the desert. He'll have to pitch well to keep his spot in the rotation for a Diamondbacks team that has some nice young talent ready and waiting in the pipeline. Davies has little fantasy upside because of a weak 17.4 percent strikeout rate.
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Zach Davies (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation and recalled reliever Sean Poppen from the minors in a corresponding move. Davies will now miss at least the next two weeks and possibly longer, depending on the severity of his injury. The 29-year-old allowed two earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two in his last outing on Saturday, and he's 2-4 on the season with a 3.94 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 62 strikeouts and 26 walks in 80 innings over his 15 starts. Davies hasn't been bad by any means, but his very weak 18% strikeout rate leave a lot to be desired from fantasy managers. It remains to be seen who will replace Davies in Arizona's rotation.
