Omari Spellman News
The New York Knicks and power forward/center Taj Gibson have agreed to a reunion, bringing the veteran back into the fold, where he is likely to join the Knicks' bench depth. In order to make room on the roster, the Knicks waived Omari Spellman, who was yet to appear in a game this year due to persistent injuries. Gibson started 56 games for New York last year, but averaged just 16.5 minutes per game, which when combined with his 6.1 PPG and 4.3 RPG averages, makes him a fantasy non-entity in season-long formats for the time being. The move reunites Gibson with head coach Tom Thibodeau, so the possibility of him cracking the rotation in the near future remains high.
New York Knicks guard Dennis Smith Jr. (quad) and forward Omari Spellman (quad) are active Wednesday against the Utah Jazz. Smith has played in one game this season and will likely make his return Wednesday, but Austin Rivers and Immanuel Quickley have both been playing well off the bench behind Elfrid Payton. As for Spellman, he is slated to make his season debut after being out with a quad injury. Spellman is behind Julius Randle but with Nerlens Noel hampered by an ankle injury, Spellman could get some run off the bench. Neither players are on the fantasy radar right now.
Golden State Warriors forward Omari Spellman and guard Jacob Evans have been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The deal also involves D'Angelo Russell heading to Minnesota in exchange for Andrew Wiggins. Spellman had some decent fantasy value until Marquese Chriss ran away with the starting center job. He'll battle with Juan Hernangomez and Jarred Vanderbilt for forward minutes, so it's best for fantasy owners to wait and see. Evans is likely going to be lost in the shuffle, so he's better left off on the waiver wire.
Golden State Warriors power forward/center Omari Spellman needed just 20 minutes as a reserve during Saturdays loss to the Detroit Pistons to collect a career-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-11 overall, including 4-for-4 from long range. It was a stellar effort from Spellman, who added five rebounds and four steals for his best fantasy outing of the year, taking a significant step forward after having scored in single digits in 11 of 13 December contests. Owners will want to temper expectations moving forward until Spellman earns more minutes with a higher frequency.
