Taj Gibson News
New York Knicks forward/center Taj Gibson (personal) is listed as questionable for Friday against the Orlando Magic. Gibson missed the season opener due to personal reasons, but has a chance to return to the team in time for Friday's game. The Knicks are thin at center with Nerlens Noel (knee) out and mostly used Julius Randle as primary backup to Mitchell Robinson. If Gibson sits again, look for Obi Toppin to see a lot of run while Robinson sits. Randle should see a ton of minutes as usual.
The New York Knicks frontcourt depth will be tested in Wednesday's season opener vs. the Celtics as center Nerlens Noel (knee) and power forward/center Taj Gibson (personal) have been ruled out prior to tip-off. Noel's absence was somewhat expected after he earned a doubtful designation, but Gibson's means that Mitchell Robinson is set to have a sizable frontcourt role alongside Julius Randle. Noel is coming off having averaged a career-best 2.2 blocks per contest last year, but with Robinson entrenched as the team's starter, his season-long fantasy upside stands to take a hit. The next opportunity that Noel or Gibson have to return to action comes Friday against Orlando.
New York Knicks guard Elfrid Payton and forward Taj Gibson have been waived by the organization. This doesn't come as surprising news since both players were expected to have significant salaries next season. Payton was the best point guard for the Knicks last season, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. Gibson is basically a backup forward who isn't worth his $10.3 million salary. Both players should be able to land themselves bench spots elsewhere. However, neither player is expected to have a relevant role in fantasy leagues.
New York Knicks center Taj Gibson only played 19 minutes against the Bulls on Saturday, but he was able to make the most of his time on the court. He scored 17 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field and knocked down seven of his eight free-throw attempts. Gibson also let his presence be known on the boards, as he collected eight rebounds, with four of them coming from crashing the offensive glass. His energy and effort on both ends played a major part in the Knicks coming away with a 125-115 victory. Gibson was terrific, but he has not proven that he can do this consistently, which is why fantasy owners should pass on the 34-year-old.
