Raiders Release Brian Hoyer

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders parted ways with quarterback Brian Hoyer. The journeyman signal-caller has bounced around the league over the years. He's appeared in 79 regular season games, tossing for 10,899 yards and 53 touchdowns (37 picks) off 59.3% passing. He hasn't done much in the last few seasons, and he finished the 2023-24 campaign by throwing for just 231 yards, along with two picks. At any rate, there could be a market for Hoyer, who has established himself as a quality backup during his career. But even if the 38-year-old finds a new team, that doesn't mean he'll draw attention from managers in fantasy drafts heading into the new season.

Aidan O'Connell Could Be Benched For Jimmy Garoppolo Or Brian Hoyer

Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce said he is not decided on who will start at quarterback on Thursday night against the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers. Rookie Aidan O'Connell could be benched for Jimmy Garoppolo or even veteran Brian Hoyer after he failed to lead the Raiders to any points in the Week 14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A previous report by The Athletic's Vic Tafur suggested it would be likely the Raiders would bench O'Connell if he played poorly this week, but it turns out O'Connell may not even get a chance to play on Thursday at all. O'Connell has been pretty bad the last few weeks and only threw for 171 yards and an interception against Minnesota. The matchup is nice against LA, but whoever is starting under center for the Raiders on Thursday will be no more than a low-end QB2 option for fantasy managers in superflex leagues.

Brian Hoyer Extends Losing Streak

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer completed 17 of 32 passes (53%) for 129 yards and two interceptions in the Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears. Hoyer, filling in for injured Jimmy Garoppolo, struggled to get the offense going at Soldier Field. The veteran quarterback had zero passing touchdowns and was sacked once. Hoyer has now lost 13 straight starts dating back to 2016. The Raiders got down big in this contest and eventually placed rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell in the game. O'Connell threw the only touchdown of the game for the Raiders in the fourth quarter. The Raiders take on the Detroit Lions in Week 8. The Lions have been middling against quarterbacks this season. Hoyer had a bad game, and it will be hard to trust him as a starter if Garoppolo misses more time. Fantasy managers should stay away from Hoyer regardless of the matchup.

Brian Hoyer Will Start At QB In Week 7

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer has been named the starter ahead of Week 7 versus the Chicago Bears, per ESPN's Dianna Russini. This comes after the team ruled out Jimmy Garoppolo (back). It appears the Raiders are continuing to experiment with their options at the quarterback position. Rookie Aidan O'Connell drew the start when Garoppolo missed Week 4, but it was Hoyer who took over after Garoppolo departed versus New England last Sunday. The veteran journeyman will operate as the Raiders' quarterback again in Week 7, ranking as a mid-range QB3 for fantasy purposes. This development isn't great news for Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, and other Vegas pass-catchers, though it helps that the Raiders have a soft matchup in the Bears.

Brian Hoyer Holds On For The Win

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer entered the game in the second half of the Week 6 win against the New England Patriots. Hoyer completed six passes on 10 attempts for 102 yards after Raiders starter Jimmy Garoppolo exited the game with a back injury. The veteran quarterback did not make any big mistakes and could hold onto the win for the Raiders. Hoyer also completed a big pass to Tre Tucker for 48 yards. It remains to be seen how severe Garoppolo's back injury is, but Hoyer will be a candidate to start in Week 7 if Garoppolo is forced to miss time. When Garoppolo was ruled out with a concussion in Week 4, rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell stepped into the starting role. However, that does not mean Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels will call on him again in the same situation. The Raiders take on the Chicago Bears in Week 7. The Bears have been one of the easier matchups for quarterbacks this season despite holding Kirk Cousins to a pedestrian stat line in Week 6. It was a decent effort, but fantasy managers should turn to other options even if Hoyer is named the Raiders starting quarterback against the Bears.

Brian Hoyer Remains On The Bench In Week 5

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer remained the backup quarterback in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers despite the absence of starter Jimmy Garoppolo. The Raiders opted to start their fourth-round rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell over the veteran Hoyer. Hoyer remains a valuable backup in this offense because he played in head coach Josh McDaniels' system with the New England Patriots. The Raiders rookie out of Purdue played relatively well but had three turnovers in the loss to the Chargers. It is unclear whether O'Connell or Hoyer will be the preferred spot starter for the Raiders in the future. Still, with Garoppolo out of concussion protocol, Hoyer will remain on the bench for the Raiders in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.

Aidan O'Connell To Start Over Brian Hoyer Sunday

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell is expected to draw the start in Week 4 versus the Los Angeles Chargers, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. With Jimmy Garoppolo (concussion) ruled out, the expectation was that veteran Brian Hoyer would handle quarterback duties on Sunday. Instead, it'll be the Purdue product making his NFL debut. The 25-year-old flashed potential in the preseason, but regular-season defenses are a whole new beast. He's not on the fantasy radar, and the likes of Davante Adams, Josh Jacobs, and Jakobi Meyers will see their fantasy value take a hit. On the other hand, the Chargers' defense becomes a solid streamer.

Brian Hoyer May Start In Week 4

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer could be in line for the start if starter Jimmy Garoppolo cannot clear the NFL's concussion protocol. Garoppolo was placed in the concussion protocol following the Raiders loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Garoppolo was able to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday and Friday but remained in the concussion protocol on Friday. The Raiders starter has one more chance to clear the protocol before being deemed unavailable for Sunday's game. It is unclear whether Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O'Connell will start for the Raiders, but more clarity on the situation should arise tomorrow once Garoppolo's status is confirmed. Hoyer has not started a game since Week 4 of the 2022 season for the New England Patriots, and he left that game after getting hurt on his first drive. Hoyer has not won a game in 12 straight starts, owning a 75.1 quarterback rating in that span. Although the Chargers are one of the easiest matchups for quarterbacks, fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a quarterback to stream in Week 4.

Raiders Sign Brian Hoyer

The Las Vegas Raiders signed free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, according to the team. Hoyer spent the last three seasons serving as a backup with the New England Patriots, but he'll now reunite with his former offensive coordinator in Josh McDaniels, who is Vegas' head coach. The 37-year-old is entering his 15th NFL season and is more of a coach than a player at this point in his career. Hoyer had three stints with the Patriots and has completed 59.4 percent of his 1,518 career attempts for 10,668 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions in 76 career games (40 starts). As things currently stand, Hoyer is set to back up starter Jimmy Garoppolo in 2023.

Brian Hoyer Expected To Be Cut By The Pats

According to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Patriots are expected to part ways with quarterback Brian Hoyer. The veteran is entering the second of a two-year, $4 million contract. While cutting him will cost $1.64 million against the salary cap, New England is confident in the duo of Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, although who will start in 2023-24 is seemingly up in the air. Hoyer has had three stints with the Patriots during his career while also suiting up for six other clubs, amassing 10,668 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 35 picks. Nevertheless, the 37-year-old is a competent backup, so he'll likely find work, assuming he doesn't retire. However, he's nowhere near a viable fantasy option, regardless of where he ends up.
