Free-agent defensive back Bryce Callahan has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 30-year-old corner has put together a fairly solid career over his first six seasons in the league. The biggest problem for Callahan has been staying healthy and on the field. Luckily, the Chargers have plenty of options at defensive back, so Callahan won't have to play a full-time role. A nice addition to the Chargers defense for an experienced player with decent upside.
Bryce Callahan Heading To Short-Term Injured Reserve
Denver Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan (knee) will be placed on the short-term Injured Reserve, according to a source. The Broncos don't think that Callahan will need surgery on his knee, but he'll be forced to miss at least the next three games while on IR. The 30-year-old was injured in the Week 8 win over the Washington Football Team, but they will be hoping to get him back for the stretch run. Callahan has recorded 21 tackles, four passes defensed and one sack in the first eight games of the season. Rookie Patrick Surtain and Ronald Darby are expected to continue starting on the outside for Denver, and the team should be getting cornerbacks Michael Ojemudia and Essang Bassey back from their injuries soon. They will both be candidates to take over for Callahan in the slot.
Denver Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) said he's been "stricter" in his diet and has cut out fast food this offseason in an effort to remain healthy. Callahan hasn't played all 16 games in any of his six NFL seasons, making a career-high 13 appearances in 2018. He missed all of his first season in Denver in 2019 and was having a Pro Bowl-worthy year last year before he landed on Injured Reserve for the final five weeks with another foot injury that didn't require surgery. The 29-year-old has been able to dedicate this offseason to his training regimen instead of worrying about rehabbing his injury. However, the additions of Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller in free agency and Patrick Surtain II in the first round of the draft may be bad news for his playing time in 2021. Callahan and the other three cornerbacks could all be on the field together in head coach Vic Fangio's dime packages, though, so Callahan could still see plenty of time on the field. If everyone stays healthy, Denver's secondary could be one of the best in the NFL.
Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said that cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) will miss time, but it's too early to say whether he's done for the rest of the season. So the Denver D will at least be without Callahan for the second divisional meeting with the Chiefs in Week 13. The Broncos Defense allowed over 40 points to the Super Bowl champions in Week 7 and have allowed 30-plus points in five of their last six games, so they should be avoided as a fantasy unit. Callahan has chipped in 42 tackles (36 solo), two interceptions, five passes defensed and a fumble recovery in 10 games this season. Without him this weekend, rookies Michael Ojemudia and Essang Bassey will have to step up opposite A.J. Bouye against the high-flying Chiefs offense.
Denver Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot), who signed a three-year, $21 million deal last offseason, is fully healed and ready to go. On the medical side, hes ready to go, defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said in a Thursday conference call. Hes running full speed. Hell be right in our camp and ready to go. Hes been totally engaged. The 28-year-old is penciled in as a starting cornerback alongside A.J. Bouye now that Chris Harris Jr. is playing with the Chargers. Callahan started 29 games and played in 45 in his four seasons with the Bears before following Vic Fangio to Denver. They'll need him to step up to help make up for the loss of Harris.
