Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Chase Daniel completed five of seven pass attempts for 25 yards and a touchdown in a Week 18 loss to the Denver Broncos. Daniel entered the contest in the fourth quarter in relief of starter Justin Herbert as the Chargers already had the AFC's fifth seed locked up heading into the week. He connected with Keenan Allen for a three-yard score that brought the Chargers within three points of the Broncos, but they were ultimately unable to complete a comeback. The 36-year-old Daniel will enter unrestricted free agency this offseason should he choose to return for a 15th professional season.
Chase Daniel Backs Up Easton Stick, Throws TD Against Cowboys
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Chase Daniel completed 13 of his 21 attempts for 111 yards and a touchdown during their 32-18 loss against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. Daniel began their Week 1 game against the Rams as the starter but backed up his teammate Easton Stick in this one. His final numbers were comparable to Stick's, plus he did not commit any turnovers while Stick committed two. It's unknown at this moment who will get the nod next week against the Saints and who is the current leader to be the backup for star quarterback Justin Herbert. This is likely a decision the coaching staff will wait until after the team's final preseason game.
Los Angeles Chargers backup quarterback Chase Daniel completed 11 of his 17 pass attempts for 117 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions during Saturday's 29-22 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Daniel was in command of an offense that was missing most of its starters. His touchdown throws included an accurate 41-yard strike to wide receiver Joe Reed and a short three-yard dump-off that receiver Michael Bandy took the remaining thirteen yards to the house. While he doesn't figure to see any regular season action, barring injury, it's beneficial to know that he could sustain the fantasy value of the Chargers' superstars, at least temporarily, should anything happen to Justin Herbert.
The Los Angeles Chargers re-signed veteran quarterback Chase Daniel to a one-year, $2.25 million deal on Tuesday, according to a source. Daniel will return in 2022 to back up impressive young quarterback Justin Herbert. The 35-year-old Daniel played in just one game last year and didn't attempt a single pass. He hasn't started a game in the NFL since he made one start for the Chicago Bears in 2019. Daniel began his career in 2010 with the New Orleans Saints and has made just five career starts over 12 seasons with the Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Bears, Detroit Lions and Chargers. The Bolts are hoping he won't have to start any games in 2022.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Chase Daniel was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday. Daniel is the backup to second-year signal-caller Justin Herbert in Los Angeles, and he hasn't attempted a single pass on five offensive snaps for the Bolts this year. If Daniel cannot get cleared in time for the Week 16 game against the Houston Texans, Easton Stick would be in line to hold the clipboard on the sidelines this weekend. Herbert's fantasy managers will keep their fingers crossed that he wasn't a close contact of Daniel.
Week 3 Can Determine No. 2 Battle Between Easton Stick And Chase Daniel
The Los Angeles Chargers have decided to rest many of their starters this preseason, but there are still plenty of spots to be figured out on the depth chart. One of those battles will be the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Justin Herbert. Veteran Chase Daniel entered camp as the No. 2 quarterback, but after a rough Week 1 of the preseason, third-year quarterback Easton Stick drew the start in Week 2 versus the San Francisco 49ers. Stick took advantage of his playing time and had a strong first half. He completed 10 of his 14 passes for touchdown pass and also chipped with 15 yards on three rushing attempts. Daniel struggled in the second half by going 14-for-21 for 60 yards and an interception. Herbert is entrenched as the starting the quarterback, but the Chargers will need to decide if they want to go with the veteran or the young arm to backup Herbert. Week 3's preseason game versus the Seattle Seahawks could be what determines the winner, but it should only matter in the fantasy world if Herbert were to get hurt and miss time during the season. If that were the case, both options would be questionable, but Stick would provide the higher upside.
Lions Planning To Release Chase Daniel, Danny Shelton
The Detroit Lions are clearing some salary cap space after re-signing Romeo Okwara on Monday, and sources say that they are planning to release quarterback Chase Daniel ($4.55 million salary) and defensive tackle Danny Shelton ($4 million salary). The Lions had been shopping Daniel for a trade in the past week. The moves combined should clear out a total of $6.3 million in cap space for the 2021 season. Daniel signed a three-year deal last year, but the Lions have a new starting quarterback in Jared Goff and may be fine with David Blough backing him up. Shelton's release will leave the team short-handed at defensive tackle. The talented veteran should land on his feet elsewhere as a big run-stuffer. Detroit will be hoping last year's sixth-round pick, John Penisini, can step up at nose tackle.
Detroit Lions backup quarterback Chase Daniel took repetitions with the first-team offense on Wednesday as Matthew Stafford (ankle, thumb, ribs) continues to be sidelined. It certainly is trending toward Daniel starting in Week 17 against the Vikings, a team the veteran backup also saw action against in Week 9. If Daniel is the starter, expectations need to be tempered for the rest of the Lions offensive weapons. The veteran passer has the knowledge to run a passable offense but lacks any kind of fantasy upside. At best, Daniel will be a low-end QB2 for those in superflex leagues in the final week of the regular season.
Detroit Lions quarterback Chase Daniel completed 13 of 18 passes for only 86 yards in the Lions 47-7 blowout loss to the Buccaneers in Week 16. Daniel replaced starter Matthew Stafford(leg) after he hobbled off the field early in the game, but the veteran backup couldn't get anything going offensively. Daniel was later replaced by third-stringer David Blough with the game well out of reach. The Lions season is over, so Stafford suiting up in Week 17 feels like a long shot at this point. Even if Daniel gets the start, he will only carry deep-league QB2 status in the final game of the season against the Vikings.
Chase Daniel Will Start If Matthew Stafford Isn't Cleared
Detroit Lions backup quarterback Chase Daniel would get the nod in Week 9 against the Vikings if Matthew Stafford is ruled out after being placed on the COVID-19 list as a high-risk close contact of a non-team member on Wednesday. The Vikings have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this year, but Daniel would still be a mostly unappealing low-end QB2 option if he gets the start this weekend. The Lions will also likely be without No. 1 receiver Kenny Golladay (hip) after he injured his hip in the Week 8 contest. Stafford will have some QB1 upside against the division-rival Vikings if he's cleared in time for Sunday.
