C.J. Beathard News
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard will get the start against New Orleans if Trevor Lawrence (knee) is unable to go. The former No. 1 overall pick is currently dealing with a knee injury and has an official questionable tag heading into the Thursday night matchup. Beathard has been the Jags' backup for the past two seasons, making a total of eight appearances for the ball club, so he is quite familiar with head coach Doug Pederson's system. While this may be the case, Beathard is a career backup that boasts a completion percentage of 59% to go along with 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions over five seasons. On a short week against one of the NFL's best defenses on the road, Beathard would only be a streaming option this week for the neediest of superflex teams.
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard went 8-for-10 for 134 yards, a touchdown, and a near-perfect passer rating of 152.1 in Saturday's 31-18 preseason win over the Miami Dolphins. The vet came into camp with a leg up on rookie Nathan Rourke for the QB2 spot behind Trevor Lawrence, but the latter has been applying some pressure with his play through two games. Beathard was the second QB to take over after Lawrence in this one, leading three consecutive scoring drives to close out the first half. The performance was highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown strike to sophomore wide receiver Tim Jones, who broke open on the left side of the field and cruised in untouched for the score. Rourke quarterbacked the entire second half of the game, which saw the Jaguars put up two more touchdowns. Still, the Ohio native finished with a measly 74 passing yards on only six attempts, as Jacksonville opted to go with a more ground-heavy attack. At this point, Beathard has held onto his QB2 position but is still firmly off the fantasy radar unless something happens to Lawrence.
The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Friday that they re-signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to an undisclosed contract extension before he became a free agent. Beathard has been in Jacksonville the last two years and will remain as the primary backup to young signal-caller Trevor Lawrence in 2023. In his two years with the Jaguars after spending the first three seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, Beathard has gone 9-for-13 for 68 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in just six games played (zero starts). The 29-year-old came on in relief of Lawrence in four games last year and totaled 35 passing yards and an interception on 11 passing attempts.
