Packers Sign Clayton Tune to Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune to their practice squad on Thursday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Tune became available to all NFL teams when the Cardinals cut him earlier this week. The 26-year-old will now head to the NFC North, where he'll serve as QB depth for the Packers behind starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis. In three preseason games for the Cardinals before being cut, Tune went 30-for-49 passing for 186 yards, one touchdown and an interception while rushing nine times for 53 yards. The former fifth-rounder (139th overall) in 2023 out of Houston has thrown for just 70 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in 13 games (one start) in his first two NFL seasons.

Cardinals Cut Clayton Tune

The Arizona Cardinals cut quarterback Clayton Tune on Monday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Tune was among 12 total players cut by the team as they work to get their roster down to 53 players before the start of the regular season in early September. The 26-year-old went 30-for-49 passing for 186 yards, one touchdown and an interception while running the ball nine times for 53 yards in three preseason games for Arizona, but he ultimately will lose out on the backup job in the desert to veteran Jacoby Brissett behind starter Kyler Murray. If he does not latch on with another team before Week 1, Tune could return to Arizona and revert to the practice squad. The former fifth-rounder in 2023 out of Houston has thrown for 70 yards, no touchdowns and two picks on 23 pass attempts in 13 games (one start) in his two NFL seasons.

Clayton Tune Throws Touchdown In Preseason Finale

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune was under duress for most of the game during the 20-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, but was able to lead the team to a touchdown. He finished the game with 83 yards and a touchdown on 12-for-20 passing while adding five carries for 47 yards. He also took five sacks, which makes sense when the Cardinals weren't playing any starters in this preseason finale. Tune seems to be locked into the third-string spot after Jacoby Brissett posted a solid couple of preseason games. Before this final game, Tune only accrued 47 passing yards, one interception, and no touchdowns.

Clayton Tune Wins Backup Job

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune is set to be the second string option behind Kyler Murray to start the season. This news was expected after quarterback Desmond Ridder was cut by the team earlier this week. Ridder was later signed to the practice squad, but it appears the Cardinals feel comfortable with Tune as the second option going forward. The fifth-round pick completed 12-of-21 passing attempts for zero touchdowns and two interceptions in seven appearances last season. If Murray goes down, it's tough to imagine Tune having any kind of fantasy value as the starter.

Clayton Tune Throws Pick-Six In Preseason Finale

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune went 12-for-18 for 119 passing yards and an interception in Sunday's preseason loss to the Denver Broncos. Tune drew the start and was swapped out for Desmond Ridder at halftime. Unfortunately, Ridder was forced to exit with a head injury late in the fourth quarter, requiring Tune to resume signal-calling duties. On Tune's first play back, he gave up an interception that linebacker Levelle Bailey returned 94-yards for a touchdown. Assuming Tune makes the final roster on Tuesday, he will merely be Kyler Murray's backup and can be dismissed in fantasy drafts.

Clayton Tune Leading Backup Quarterback Competition

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune will start the team's preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, indicating that he has a lead over Desmond Ridder for the backup QB spot behind Kyler Murray. Ridder was dealt to the Cardinals in March in exchange for wide receiver Rondale Moore, but he's fighting for a roster spot if the team does not keep three quarterbacks. Tune, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, threw for 62 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in one start last year. Fantasy managers in Superflex or two-QB leagues should monitor the backup competitions around the league, as any QB2 could become a starter and enter the fantasy football radar if injuries take place.

Clayton Tune Starts, Scores Rushing Touchdown In Loss

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Clayton Tune got the start on Saturday in their contest with the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Tune was 8-of-10 passing for 79 yards, while adding two rushes for 15 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown was a 12-yard scamper after being flushed out of the pocket and rolling right to beat a defender to the corner of the end zone for the score. Tune is battling former Atlanta Falcon Desmond Ridder for the QB2 job behind Kyler Murray and Tune may just have the leg up on that job after tonight. You can leave Tune undrafted in fantasy, however, as Tune would only have fantasy value if Murray misses any time during the season.

Clayton Tune A Risky Play If Murray Misses Time

As Week 17 approaches, Arizona Cardinals backup quarterback Clayton Tune looms as a potential starter if Kyler Murray is sidelined due to illness. However, facing a formidable Eagles defense, Tune doesn't project as a reliable fantasy option. For fantasy managers deliberating whether to wait for Murray's status or pivot to Tune, the decision hinges on the urgency of securing a starting quarterback. If the waiver wire offers more favorable options, the risk of Tune's uncertain performance may outweigh the potential reward. With a challenging matchup against the Eagles defense, fantasy managers may be better served exploring alternative quarterback options for Week 17. With Murray expected to play, fantasy managers rostering him should keep a close eye on his health updates leading up to kickoff to make an informed decision regarding Tune's fantasy viability.

Clayton Tune Unimpressive In Defeat

Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Clayton Tune completed 11 of 20 passes for 58 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Cardinals' 27-0 loss to the Cleveland Browns. He also rushed five times for 28 yards and lost a fumble. The first-year signal caller had a tough assignment in his initial NFL start, going up against one of the top defenses in the league. The results were about what was to be expected, as Tune looked out of sorts and uncomfortable all day. This will likely be a one-and-done scenario for the rookie unless the Cardinals give Kyler Murray (knee) one more week to get healthy. Moving forward, Tune should be avoided in all formats.

Clayton Tune Expected To Start In Week 9

Arizona Cardinals fifth-round rookie quarterback Clayton Tune is expected to make his first NFL start in Week 9 against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, according to sources. Tune worked with the starting offensive unit all week long while Kyler Murray (knee) worked with backups. Murray is expected to come off Injured Reserve to make his season debut in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons, so this will most likely be a one-week start for Tune after the Cardinals traded Joshua Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Tune looked good in training camp and impressed the coaches, but fantasy managers shouldn't be using him in starting lineups in Week 9 unless they are absolutely desperate for a second QB in superflex leagues.
