Bills Try Out Former Top-Five Pick Corey Davis

The Buffalo Bills recently evaluated former Tennessee Titans and New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis during a tryout. Davis, who retired briefly before making a comeback, was the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and is looking to rejoin the league. Over his six-year career, Davis has accumulated 273 catches for 3,879 yards and 17 touchdowns. His standout season came in 2020 with the Titans, where he recorded career highs with 65 receptions, 984 yards, and five touchdowns. Afterward, Davis signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Jets. The Bills' interest in Davis follows the placement of receiver Chase Claypool on season-ending injured reserve and comes in the wake of trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans for a 2025 second-round pick earlier this offseason. In response, the Bills have also added Curtis Samuel through free agency on a three-year deal and selected Keon Coleman with their top pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jets Officially Release Corey Davis

The New York Jets officially released wide receiver Corey Davis from the Reserve/Retired list on Thursday, making him free to sign with any team on the open market. Davis, who is still an option to return to the Jets, applied for reinstatement from the NFL earlier in the day after announcing his retirement towards the end of last season. The 29-year-old pass-catcher now wants to return to football in 2024, but it remains to be seen where he'll be playing. The Tennessee Titans' former first-round pick (fifth overall) in 2017 out of Western Michigan caught 66 of 123 targets for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns from 2021-22 in two seasons with the Jets. Wherever he's playing in 2024, the veteran wideout will likely be battling for a depth role and is unlikely to make a mark in fantasy.

Corey Davis Filing For Reinstatement

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis (personal) did not play in 2023 after taking a break from football for personal reasons. He was placed on the reserve/retired list by New York in late August. However, NFL insider Field Yates reports that Davis has applied for reinstatement to the NFL, meaning he wants to return in 2024. The Jets are expected to release Davis from the reserve/retired list, but a return to the organization is still in play. Originally the No. 5 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2017 out of Western Michigan, Davis has hauled in 273 of his 461 targets for 3,879 yards and 17 touchdowns through his first 78 NFL games. He's never lived up to his draft status, but he could be a serviceable WR3 option for teams in need of pass-catchers. That said, he's likely to be rusty and will not begin the season on the fantasy radar.

Corey Davis Hangs Up His Cleats

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis has decided to retire after recently being away from the team at training camp due to personal reasons. Davis' future with the Jets had been in question this offseason, but it's a bit surprising to see him hang up his cleats after just six seasons in the NFL. He was a former first-round pick (fifth overall) of the Tennessee Titans in 2017 out of Western Michigan. The 28-year-old spent his first three years in the league in Tennessee before playing for the Jets the last two years, where he caught 66 of 123 targets for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns in 22 games (19 starts). Davis will finish his career with 273 receptions for 3,879 yards and 17 touchdowns in 78 games (67 starts). With Davis out of the picture now in New York in 2023, Mecole Hardman Jr., Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb all have a path to more targets in the passing game behind No. 1 wideout Garrett Wilson.

Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis Still Not Practicing

New York Jets wide receivers Garrett Wilson (ankle) and Corey Davis (illness) are both out of training camp practice again on Tuesday. Wilson suffered a low-ankle sprain in last Thursday's practice and hasn't been out on the field since. It's not a serious injury and the second-year wideout should be considered day-to-day. The 23-year-old has plenty of time to heal up before the start of the regular season, but he won't be appearing in Thursday's Hall of Fame game against the Cleveland Browns. Wilson thoroughly impressed in his rookie campaign in 2022, catching 83 of 147 targets for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games (12 starts). With quarterback Aaron Rodgers now running the offense, more will be expected out of Wilson as a bona-fide WR1 in fantasy.

Corey Davis Will Be Involved Next Season

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis is going to be part of the team heading into next season, according to head coach Robert Saleh. The 28-year-old didn't have much success as the No. 2 wideout last season. He finished with 32 receptions, 536 yards, and two touchdowns for the struggling Jets offense. At first glance, Davis would have a more difficult time in 2023 with new additions Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb. However, the Jets claim that the former first round pick is going to be part of the team. Davis is going to have plenty of competition heading into camp, but it doesn't sound like the team is going to cut him.

Corey Davis Could Be A Cap Casualty This Offseason?

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis could be a cap casualty this offseason. The Jets are projected to be over the cap and have some difficult decisions to cut critical players to save money. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, people in and around the Jets are operating under the assumption that Davis will be a cap casualty. The Jets could save $10.5 million with a minimal penalty if the team releases Davis. The 28-year-old has missed 12 games over the last two seasons due to injuries. He caught 32 passes for 536 yards and two touchdowns over 13 games in 2022. Davis could provide wide receiver depth and be a solid addition in the right offense if he is a cap casualty this offseason.

Corey Davis Makes One Catch In Week 18 Loss

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis made just one catch to wrap up the season in a Week 18 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Davis saw three targets, and made his one catch for a 17-yard gain. Davis was expected to be a boom-or-bust option before the season started, and he was exactly that, although he busted much more often than he boomed. Davis is unlikely to make much of a fantasy impact next season, he's signed for another season with the Jets who will likely be working with a new quarterback in charge.

Corey Davis Makes Three Catches In A Week 17 Loss

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis made three catches in a Week 17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With those three grabs, Davis ended up tied for second most catches on the team. He gained 45 yards, which was second most on the team. It wasn't a great game for the Jets offense in general, but it was good to see Davis somewhat involved especially since his first catch didn't come until the second half. He'll get one more chance to make some noise in a Week 18 game against the Dolphins.

Corey Davis Hauls In Just Two Of Seven Targets

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis caught just two passes for 14 yards on seven targets in the Week 16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football. Davis missed the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions with a concussion, but he failed to produce anything in his return to the lineup. Mike White (ribs) could be back at quarterback for New York in Week 17, but the matchup with the Seattle Seahawks (allow third-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers) keeps Davis off the fantasy radar. Garrett Wilson is the only Jets' wideout worth trusting in that game.
