The Washington Football Team signed former Carolina Panthers and New York Giants linebacker David Mayo to an undisclosed deal on Thursday. Washington also added center Tyler Larsen. The 27-year-old was a fifth-round pick of the Panthers back in 2015. Mayo did very little in his four seasons with the Panthers. He had a solid debut season with the Giants in 2019, posting a career-high 82 combined tackles (five for loss) and two sacks while starting in 13 games. He was expected to remain a starter in 2021, but he was released after injuring his knee in training camp last year and missing the first five weeks of the season. Mayo made just two starts for the G-Men in 2020.
The New York Giants released linebacker David Mayo on Wednesday. Mayo had two years left on his deal. Combined with the release of veteran wide receiver Golden Tate, the Giants will save a combined $8.4 million in salary cap space for 2021. He was acquired off waivers just before the 2019 season opener, and he went on to record 82 tackles (five for loss) and two sacks. Mayo signed a three-year contract extension last offseason but suffered a torn meniscus in his knee shortly before Week 1 and was placed on Injured Reserve. He played in 11 games last year, mostly as a backup, and recorded only 29 tackles.
New York Giants linebacker David Mayo (knee) is expected to have surgery to trim his injured meniscus, according to a source. It won't be a full repair, so that could put him back on the field in around three weeks. It's good news for Mayo, but there's still a good chance that he won't be completely up to speed by Week 1. New York's linebacking depth will probably be tested early on. Blake Martinez is the star of this group up the middle, but Ryan Connelly may be forced into a starting role if Mayo isn't ready by the season opener. The Giants Defense as a whole is well off the fantasy radar in standard leagues.
