Buffalo Bills defensive end Dawuane Smoot (toe) has been ruled out ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. It's a short week and it doesn't sound like Smoot is going to have enough time to get ready to play. He also sat out of the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. The hope is that Smoot can rest during Thursday's game and be able to suit up for the Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former third-round pick is expected to be a rotational player on this defense. He has been a rotational player throughout most of his career, but he did record 36 tackles and six sacks in 16 games (10 starts) with the Jaguars in 2021. His absence is unlikely to have much of an impact on this defense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed defensive end Dawuane Smoot (Achilles) to a one-year deal on Friday with a maximum value of $6.25 million. Smoot had a visit with the Baltimore Ravens looming, but the Jaguars stepped up to bring him back into the fold after he suffered a torn right Achilles last December. The 28-year-old has worked hard to get himself healthy again, though, so he'll be a part of Jacksonville's defensive plan in 2023. The former third-rounder in 2017 has played all six of his NFL seasons with the Jags, totaling 123 tackles (86 solo), 22.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, 60 QB hits, five passes defensed, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 87 games (17 starts).

Smoot has been one of the team's best defensive linemen this year, so losing him for the rest of the season would be a big blow as they try to make the playoffs. He's getting an MRI exam on Friday. The 27-year-old was carted off the field on Thursday night in the fourth quarter after a non-contact injury, which usually never end up being good. In his sixth year with Jacksonville, Smoot has recorded 21 tackles (14 solo), five sacks, six tackles for loss, 12 QB hits, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 15 games played (zero starts).

Despite a disappointing overall defense in 2020, Smoot was one of several young players that showed promise. The 26-year-old was a third-round pick in 2017. He started out slow, but he has racked up 11.5 sacks in the last two years and continues to improve. Smoot is a versatile defensive line piece who led the team in sacks with 5.5 and also chipped in 25 tackles. Under new defensive coordinator Joe Cullen, Smoot could take the next step in 2021. In 56 career games (seven starts), Smoot has 66 combined tackles (14 for loss), 32 QB hits, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 11.5 sacks over four seasons.
